Duke Nukem Forever Will Support A3D2.0 and Dolby Surround Posted by - Frank - 5:39 pm EST

It's official boys and girls, DNF will support A3D2.0 and Dolby Surround Sound Encoding. Here is the information we have gathered from the DNF Faq.

What sound APIs and hardware will DNF support?

Duke Nukem Forever will support virtually any sound cards which Windows supports, via DirectSound and your sound card's WAV output.  DNF also will support Aureal 3D 2.0 positional audio and will include software support for Dolby Surround Sound encoding for output to your Surround Sound compatible speakers.

EAX will also be supported since Duke3D is based on the unreal engine which supports EAX. A little weird why they didn't put it in the Faq though, we will try and notify them about this mistake.

You can find this information in the Duke Nukem Forever Faq which is located HERE.

MX300 vs Live! in Half-Life
Posted by -Mikael - 8:45 am EST

Civerb let us know he has done a thorough review of half-life's sound comparing the MX300 and the Live using the latest drivers and patches available. Here's a snip:

I think all of you need to be reminded that interactive four channel sound is here truly for the first time! This was "unheard of" just a short time ago and we are all on the cutting edge of technology with either card . I make my money in Hollywood as a sound engineer and this IS the wave of the future. All Digital in Hollywood is passive participation. Both Aureal and Creative should be applauded for there pioneering work in this field. Honestly people we ARE living in the future NOW.
Im in Heaven with both cards.

Half Life Uplink Demo

If all the awards and chatter on Half Life have not yet convinced you that its a must buy then you are in luck as a 48.5 MB demo has been released over at the PCGamer Online site.  Its all new stuff, so even you Half Life veterans may want to fire it up.  Head on over to Blue's where I got this news for a list of alternate download sites or check out 3Dfiles.com.

ID, Quake 2 and IAS
Posted by -Mark -12:05 am EST

I snagged the following from Extreme Audio Reality, the makers of the IAS 3D audio patch for Quake 2.

Found out we got a "Cease and Desist" infringement order from "id Software" via fax last Friday concerning our Quake 2 enhancements; so far they have been very amiable (we explained we are definitely not charging for our mod and only distributing via the Internet) but I think a dull roar from our users (maybe, say, to id's suggestion box?!?) would help tremendously. (Say,... maybe with id's help we'll get multi-player working....)

Definitely not good news.

Updated Thief Demo
Posted by -Mark - 5:45 pm EST

I forgot to mention that an updated demo of Thief: The Dark Project was released yesterday.  This is another monster sized 53.5 MB demo which from past experience I can say is bulked up on sound files! Don't forget if  you have the full version that the1.33 patch is now available.   Thanks to Blue for the news.  You can try Blue's list of dl locations or 3Dfiles.com

Were Back...
Posted by - The 3DsoundSurge Team

Wow - that was certainly painful for us.  Its really amazing how much we missed not being able to do our part in keeping fans of 3D sound on top of the news.  Aside from banging our heads against the wall each an every day in an effort to bring back the server, we have been putting our time off line to good use.

We are just putting the finishing touches on a review of Boston Acoustics' Media Theater system and on two interviews.  One with Stuart Denman, Lead Programmer on Drakan and Tim Ebling Programming and music production on Drakan and another   with Toni Schneider of Aureal.  Look for these to be posted over then next few days.

In addition, look for a follow-up on our recent Sensaura feature as our own Simon King recently paid a visit to their London office.  Want more?  Well we will have it.  We are working on a number of new game reviews and previews such as Motorhead, Starsiege, Sin, Half Life, Tribes and a whole lot more.

Not enough?  Look for more in-depth looks at the latest audio hardware including reviews of Xitel's Storm Platinum, Yahama's Waveforce Digital, Trident's 4DWave-DX and speakers from Microsoft and Benwin to name a few.

But wait! There's more.  Watch out for a contest where we are going to give away a brand new Yahama Waveforce XG!   Its just our way of thanking you for your patience over our down time.

Finally, we would like to thank 3D Audio immersion for keeping you updated on our plight.   Speaking of 3DAI, they have some news on Volition's Descent Freespace 2 and Summoner supporting DS3D with EAX and A3D along with some other good stuff so be sure to pay them a visit.

I say the following over at Extreme Audio Reality in respect to their Interactive Around Sound (IAS) components.
