More on the Parametric EQ for the SBLive! - Mark @ 12:50 EST
Just a quick update to say that I have installed the unofficial patch that enables the Parametrix EQ on the Live and LCS-2514 review - Mikael @ 03:42 EST
Ga-Hardware has completed a review of Labtec's $80 4-speaker system, the LCS-2514. They found the sound quality especially bass to be really good. No mention how it compares to the FPS1000 or Altec Lansing's ACS54 that both have SRP of less than $100 and can be easily found for less than $70. Based on their comments it looks like it could match or perhaps even beat the ACS54. Probably should ask Labtec to send this one to us so we can check it out. News Source: Anandtech
AIWA will introduce a car CD/MP3 player in June - Mikael @ 03:16 EST
Reaffirming its commitment to the car audio market, AIWA early this year introduced a new line of CD receivers, cassette receivers and CD changers. In CD receivers, AIWA's most innovative new model is the CDC-MP3, equipped with a CD player able to play MP3-encoded discs. Typically, these would be CD-R discs onto which a consumer, using a CD-R/RW recorder, has recorded MP3 files downloaded from the Internet. Other CDC-MP3 features include a power output of 45 watts X 4, full flap type detachable front panel, CD changer control, four-color LCD dot matrix display, two preamp outputs, steering wheel remote control, Advanced H-Bass, Source Level Adjustment, My Information and Advanced DSSA. The CDC-MP3 will be available in June at a suggested retail price of $350.00. Check out the press release for details about AIWA's other CD receivers, cassette receivers and CD changers. Die Hard Trilogy 2:Viva Las Vegas Demo - Mark @ 09:33 EST
A demo has just been released for the A3D 2.0 supporting Die Hard Trilogy 2 (which is in stores). You can check out a short article on the music in the game over at Avault. Grab the 33 MB demo from 3Dfiles. If it looks and sounds like your kind of game then you can order it online for only $29.95 from Gamestop where you will also find more information about the game.
Thief 2 Review - Mark @ 09:26 EST
The Game Den has posted a review of the DS3D with EAX 2.0 and A3D (2.0?) supporting Thief 2: The Metal Age. Like all reviews I have seen they are quite impressed with the sound. Here's a taste:.the sound is definitely one of the best around. This game truly utilized and maximized the technology of the latest soundcards as did the first game. The crisp and clear sound presented in the game makes a unique kind of experience as you actually hear what you see and what you have yet to see. The voice acting faired well too in bringing to life the character of Garrett. The music sure does fit the background bringing more intensity. If you don't already have this highly rated game, you can get it online from Gamestop for only $37.99. At the Gamestop link, you will also find additional background info on the game as well as links to download the demo.

Maxi Sound Fortissimo review - Mikael @ 02:18 EST
Computers R Us has posted a review of the Guillemot's 4-speaker YMF744 based soundcard card Maxi Sound Fortissimo. They thought the card was pretty good, a bit more CPU usage than some other cards but not a big deal. For a second and more detailed opinion you can check out Mark's review of this card News Source: AGN Hardware

ACS56 review - Mikael @ 02:16 EST
Altec Lansing just let me know that PlayNOW posted a review of their ACS56 speaker system a couple weeks ago. It's a very positive review that also include a bit on what a difference 4-speaker does to games using 3D sound. One clear difference compared to my review is that I considered the ACS56 to be a midrange performer with an excellent price tag while this review thinks it's high quality but expensive. I guess this reviewer thinks 150 US dollars are about as much as you can pay for computer speakers while I also consider much more expensive systems like VideoLogic's Sirocco Crossfire to be an option. For more about my impression of the ACS56 check out my review
Quake3 patch - Mikael @ 02:16 EST
A new patch for the once A3D 2.0 supporting Quake3 has been released. I have not checked it yet but I don't think 3D sound is working on Vortex2 cards. It didn't work using the 2041 or 2048 drivers with the 1.16 patch anyway. If you get the A2D files from Aureal it will work with DS3D cards but in some cases (e.g. Live) some sound effects will be dropped. You can grab the patch from 3dfiles.
SoF A3D and EAX issues - Mikael @ 02:15 EST
Raven's Jake Simpson has done the following update to his .plan fileWe found the cause of the EAX and A3D problems after the 1.04 patch. (And before the patch in the case of A3D).For EAX, the patch deleted EAXsnd.dll, ready for the new one that was supposed to be installed. Of course, since this was yanked at the last minute, there isn't one. So it got deleted and not recreated. No wonder EAX doesn't work. :) You can either go to one of the SOF websites out there and grab it - I just sent Email to everyone (or got Kenn to :)) with this file, - or you can re-install the original version of SOF, copy out the file, install the patch, and then put it back. We apologise for the mistake on our end for this. This is our fault, and we take the responsibility for it. A3D. We shipped with an old version of A3DAPI.dll. This is why some are having problems with Montego II cards and the mx300 in some cases. Again, go to any of your favorite SOF websites, and the revised version of a3dapi.dll should be there for download. Just replace the original version in windows/system and Raven/sof and you are good to go. This will be updated in all future patches. Not quite sure how this one happened - we should have shipped with the latest version. Still, at least we caught it. Happy noise making.:) We and some other sites (e.g. Vortex of Sound) reported about the A3D issue months ago so surprised this is news to Raven. If you have not installed the latest A3D files I suggest you grab the A3D files from A3D.com rather than trying to get just the last a3dapi.dll file from one of the SoF fan sites. If you already have installed the latest A3D files you should already have the new a3dapi.dll file (3.12) in your windows\system folder so you just have to delete or rename the one in the SoF folder.
Live Driver Download Link - Mark @ 02:14 EST
The Singapore server is still swamped if you try to connect to the driver download page. However, thanks to Anson Lam we can offer you the following direct FTP link. As noted, these files are not on any of Creative's other sites yet but we have heard from a couple of people who have installed them with no issues. The FTP link is ftp://ftp.ctlsg.creaf.com/Creative/drivers/sblive/. He also noted that in his experience, the American and European sites are often about 2-4 weeks behind the Singapore site when it comes to some driver updates.
More on REVAT True Fidelity - Mark @ 02:13 EST
You may recall the PR we posted a couple of days ago on JAM Technologies REVA (TM) True Fidelity (R) audio amplifier which they state brings ultra-high resolution audio to computers at no increase in cost. I am not sure how many of you followed up on those links but there is some really interesting reading to be found at their web site and there is also a PDF white paper on "Class J" amplification that we have locally for your convenience (their site is slow every time I have tried it) in either a zipped (213 kb) or unzipped (390 kb) format. According to their FAQ, Class J amplification, which is being introduced by REVAT True Fidelityr, offers the first transformer-less, high-quality, high-power, all-digital audio amplification technology that generates an output voltage that is 300-400% of the supply voltage. This technology can be effectively used with the low voltages associated with PC power supplies to deliver high quality, high power, all-digital output directly to any conventional, non-self-powered speaker. The FAQ also notes that speakers respond as well to digital signals as they do to analog signals. Here's a snipAs with all things digital, when the resolution is fine enough, the result resembles analog. Consider, for example, a high quality, 1200 dots-per-inch laser printer, in which the resolution is so fine that the individual dots are no longer distinguishable as dots to the human eye. Similarly, the ultra high resolution of REVAT True Fidelityr makes the individual pulses indistinguishable as pulses, resulting in clear, high quality audio. We will be following up on this new technology through out the coming weeks but you can do your own follow-up by checking out the official JAM Technologies web site and/or reading the white paper. Special thanks goes out to Gary Gensel, who took the time to compile the official REVA FAQ to a text format and mail it to us along with the PDF file.
Metallica Speaks: Put Napster out of Business - Mark @ 02:13 EST
That's the title of an article over at Yahoo. There is also a similar more focused second article that looks at the fact that Metallica is compiling a list of Napster users! Lars Ulrich, drummer for the heavy-metal band Metallica, suggested that the U.S. Congress should step in to stop MP3-swapping services like Napster "before this whole Internet thing runs amok." I find it somewhat ironic that a band like Metallica is first out of the block in terms of kicking up a stink about Napster, but when you consider the age bracket of people downloading digital music, it may be bands like Metallica that have the most to fear.
Rome MP3 Review - Mikael @ 02:12 EST
Electronic Review Zone has posted a review of the Rome MP3 player. This is a rather different unit than the typical portable MP3 player as it can be "played" as a normal audio cassette making it perfect for in car us. This is a nicely written review well worth checking out.
Sony and Universal Subscription-based Service - Mikael @ 02:12 EST
Sony Music Entertainment (SME) and Universal Music Group (UMG) announced yesterday that they have agreed to enter into a joint venture to develop a subscription-based service which will include various music and video offerings for the Internet across multiple platforms such as computers, wireless personal devices, and set-top boxes. Both companies will license content to the new venture.
Over Two-Thirds of Online Music Shoppers Expect Free Downloads - Mikael @ 23:54 EST
Over 66 percent of 5,200 online music shoppers have not paid for (and would not expect to pay for) digital music downloads, according to Greenfield Online's e-Merging Music II research report. In total, 45 percent of respondents have downloaded music from the Internet. Other interesting bit is that the price is a driving force for nearly 80 percent of online music shoppers. This means that if consumers can find the item for a lower price elsewhere, either online or offline, that's where the transaction will occur. More than half of respondents (55 percent) shopped for music online and then purchased offline, while 53 percent shopped for and purchased music online in the past 90 days. You can find more details about the survey in the press release
MP3.com Receives Judge's Opinion, increase traffic and cuts new deal - Mikael @ 23:50 EST
Yesterday, United States District Court Judge Jed Rakoff issued a written opinion detailing his summary judgement order granted to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) against San Diego-based MP3.com, on April 28. For what the judge said check out this Reuters story. According to MP3.com, the court's statements were anticipated. You can see their full response in the press release. Another Reuters story says the MP3.com traffic hasn't been hurt by the recent rulings and in fact has increased 4% to 328,000 unique visitors last week. Napster saw an even bigger increase to 553,000 unique visitors, that's up 20%. I have to say I'm surprised that the traffic hasn't increased more but I guess it's almost every week some big story about MP3.com and Napster. More important news for MP3.com today is that they managed to cut a licensing agreement with the American performing rights organization, Broadcast Music Incorporated, widely known as BMI. More than 140,000 U.S. songwriters and composers and over 60,000 U.S. publishers are represented by BMI. This licensing agreement will allow MP3.com to perform the BMI repertoire of more than 4.5 million recognizable compositions from within the MP3.com site. You can check out the press release for more details
Aztech PCI 288Q3DII Sound Card Review - Mark @ 22:54 EST
Hardware Zone has posted a review of the Aztech PCI 288Q3II, which used the Trident 4DWave-NX Chipset. One common error in the review is the get a bit mixed up on QSound and Q3D 2.0 as its not a stand alone API, is a 3D technology that used DS3D with EAX rather than emulates it. The card, as they note, also does a good job of A3D 1.x to DS3D translation. In terms of their feature set overview I have nothing to say as a couple of the paragraphs of the technical overview were lifted basically word for word (without our knowledge) from our review of Trident's 4DWave NX reference board! Moving back to their own text, they note that EAX should not be felt in two speaker mode which does not make sense given that EAX 1.0 that the card support is reverb which you should be able to notice with even one speaker! Its also worth noting that 3d sound in Q3A can only work if they installed Aureal's A2D drivers. I have not tried the Soldier of Fortune retail version but I know that the demo requires either full A3D 2.0 or EAX 2.0 support for 3D sound to work so I assume the retail version either has an option for plain DS3D or the unified EAX driver that is supposed to enable EAX 1.0 cards to work with EAX 2.0 games is working in the retail version SofF. The review also offers some ZD Audio benchmarks with two different systems than what we tested. For much more details on the card and performance, including some of the same words ;), you can read our review of the 4DWaveNX reference board! For the record, it is flattering to be used as a resource for reviews, but its still surprising to find two paragraphs of your own words in someone else's review when that person never bothered to ask or at least list us as a reference site for the review. Bill Gate's Sound System! - Mark @ 21:24 EST
If you are curious about IplayMp3 Moveman Review - Mark @ 18:48 EST
3Dhardware net has posted a review of the IplayMp3 Moveman. The review notes that the "Moveman Mp3 player comes with 56 or 80 megs of ram, is pretty compact, and employs an ingenious USB CF (Compact Flash I, II) card reader.a pretty cool set of headphones" and is affordably priced ($250 with 56 MB flash card). If you get the impression that they liked the unit then your right! The review also answers most of the important questions with the only one left unanswered for me is bit rate support. Overall a good read well worth checking out!

Guillemot Maxi Sound Fortissimo Review - Mark @ 19:01 EST
Rizenet has posted a review of Guillemot's Maxi Sound Fortissimo. Just a couple of comments. You won't get 4 speaker 3d sound in Homeworld because Homeworld unfortunately supports neither A3D or DS3D. In Unreal Tournament you have enable 3d sound support in the config options, and it appears the reviewer must not have done so given their comments as 3D sound and EAX support on the Fortissimo is actually very good! When it comes to output level of the card for their Takstar headphones, I have no idea why they had too low a line out level given that the Takstar headphones have their own built in amplifier which is used when the headphones are in "force feedback" mode. Its more likely that the batteries for the headphones were low but its worth noting that the Fortissimo is simply performing in this regard like most modern soundcard, as it does not have an amplified line out. Headphone support in the way most of us think of it (that is 3d sound quality) is very good on the Fortissimo. Its also worth noting that 4 speaker 3d audio on the Fortissimo is again very good. Again, I can only assume that they did not test with the right games or options enabled given their conclusion that the 4 speaker surround is poor. As for using the card with 5.1 systems. Its again a good choice if you have a decoder that uses an optical output, and the latest retail boxes have even added the excellent PowerDVD 2.5 into the bundle so you get AC3 4 speaker downmixing right out of the box if you have a DVD player! For lots more on the Fortissimo you can check out our own review. One thing we completely agree on is the Fortissimo is a great buy! News Source: AGN Hardware
4-speaker support in SoF is broken? - Mikael @ 01:01 EST
Travis just let me know that even after removing the old a3dapi.dll file in the SoF folder 4-speaker still fails to work on his Vortex2 card. If anyone got 4-speaker support to work in SoF using a Vortex2 card let me know.
A3D in Quake3 still broken - Mikael @ 00:59 EST
Just tried the last patch with the Vortex2 (testing with the 2041 and 2048 drivers) and A3D doesn't work. I can enable it but it doesn't seem to have any effect and if I use the command "/s_2dvolume 0" which disables all stereo sound I hear almost no sound effects at all. That is I obviously get just stereo even when I enable A3D. DS3D cards with the A2D drivers still works even though some cards including the Live doesn't work that well. The problem I have with the Live is that quite often when firing the shotgun it's like I hear only the reverb part of the sound effect.
MidiLand ADS-2000 Dolby Digital Decoder Reviewed - Mikael @ 00:48 EST
Until now, stand alone hardware Dolby Digital decoders have typically been too expensive to rationalize their purchase for use with speaker systems costing around the same or less. Now, thanks to MidiLand, that has changed and anyone can have access to a hardware Dolby Digital decoder for just 100 dollars and it even includes a remote! The decoder is called the Audio Digital Station ADS-2000. In this review we will compare it to the decoder in the DTT2500, as well as compare it to the software AC3 decoding to a 4-speaker down-mix on several sound cards as well as the 5.1 analog software support offered by Best Data's Theatrix and Skywell's Magic Sound Live when they are used with a supporting software MPEG decoder.
Napster Responds to Metallica Action - Mikael @ 00:06 EST
As you know Lars Ulrich, a member of the music group Metallica, and the band's attorney were personally delivering documents to its San Mateo offices where Napster has been named as a defendant in an action brought by Metallica and its business units, E.M. Ventures and Creeping Death Music, alleging copyright infringement and related claims. In response, Napster's counsel, Laurence Pulgram, at Fenwick & West, LLP in San Francisco, stated: ``Napster intends to comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and it takes those obligations seriously. Napster will review the over 300,000 fan names that Metallica turned in as soon as possible. If the claims are submitted properly, the company will take the appropriate actions to disable the users Metallica has identified. Of course, if the band would provide the names in computerized form, rather than in tens of thousands of pages of paper intended to create a photo opp, that would expedite the process.'' ``It is important to understand that Napster does not itself make available any MP3 materials over the Internet. Napster merely provides computer software that allows its users to choose which files to make available to each other, and which files to download. As we told Metallica's lawyer on April 20, Napster is able to respond to claims of copyright infringement by disabling the access of identified users, not by excluding particular songs or artists. So the upshot of Metallica's notice may be to prevent its fans from using Napster at all.'' You can find more details in the press release. In related law suit Reuters yesterday reported that the music industry expects a decision any day in its lawsuit against Napster.
Cirrus Logic, Creative Technology and Vertex Join Forces - Mikael @ 00:00 EST
Cirrus Logic today disclosed that it has signed a definitive agreement with Creative Technology and Vertex Technology Fund (II) to form eMicro Corporation, a fabless joint manufacturing venture based in Singapore. Under terms of the agreement, eMicro will become licensee of Cirrus Logic's proprietary circuits -- and a strategic supplier of audio codecs and other mixed-signal chip solutions to Creative Technology. Sim Wong Hoo, chairman and chief executive officer of Creative Technology, sees his firm's investment in eMicro ensuring a local and timely access to the advanced chip development capabilities required to meet the demand for increasingly sophisticated consumer electronics products. ``The formation of eMicro not only puts in place Singapore-based semiconductor engineering talent to support our system developers in the region, but it also creates an opportunity for synergy with Cirrus Logic, the technology and market leader in mixed-signal ICs.'' You can find more details about the deal in the press release

New Live! Drivers? - Mark @ 02:05 EST
You may have seen reports by now of a new driver release for Creative's line of Sound Blaster Live cards. However, neither Mikael nor I have been able to connect to the given link (http://www.ctlsg.creaf.com/support/drivers/newfiles.asp). The reported changes are:Updated version of Surround Mixer 1.0 and AudioHQ.1024-voice software MIDI synth for Sound Blaster Live! (Option to select up to 1024 software voices)Improved support for Occlusion and Obstruction effects in EAX2.0. I am assuming that the new part about the MIDI synth is the ability to set just how many voices the software synth uses as the version in LW3.0 already does 1024 voices. Once we can verify the link and the details, as well as why it's not any of the usual driver pages, and when it might be, we will update again but for now I would suggest that you save your effort and not bother try that overloaded link that I gave ;). Thanks to Mazi Bahadori of Tech Extreme for dropping us a line about the drivers.

Altec Lansing ACS54 Review - Mikael @ 02:04 EST
The Game Den has posted a review of Altec Lansing's ACS54, a low cost, entry level 4.1 system and they were quite impressed. For all of the reasons why check out their review. For a second, and also positive, opinion of the ACS54 you can check out our own review.
Aureal news - Mikael @ 02:03 EST
Vortex of Sound has posted some of what they know about the current situation at Aureal. They mention that more people left Aureal, there are new WDM drivers in testing and as far as they know Aureal isn't in discussion to sell the company or its technology to Creative Labs. The Creative Labs rumour has been posted in both Vortex of Sound's and our forum but when I checked the Creative they said that rumour is incorrect. If you check out Vortex of Sound's forum you will also see a new rumour that claims the company Aureal currently talks to is Nvidia. Nvidia earlier this year confirmed that they would enter the sound chip business again but at that time they were not sure if it would be a discrete audio chip or an integrated graphics/audio chip. I don't think they will buy the Aureal technology though. I also expect their audio chips if it's ever released will mostly target set-top box/game console market not PC soundcards sold at retail.
Week in Review - Mikael @ 01:59 EST

The 3D Audio Week in Review is a great way for busy people to be right on top of all latest in the PC audio world.
VideoLogic Sirocco Spirit Reviewed! - Mikael @ 01:56 EST
The Sirocco Spirit is one of the latest additions to VideoLogic Systems' Sirocco series. The Sirocco series offers excellent quality at reasonable price points. The goal of the Sirocco Spirit was to offer a relatively compact system while still maintaining as much of the original Sirocco's sound quality as possible. To accomplish this VideoLogic used the same high quality midrange and tweeter as the original Sirocco and the cabinets are still of MDF. To save space they integrated the amplifier into the right speaker and skipped the subwoofer. To still get good bass response the satellites are now ported (bass hole), the cabinet size is increased and VideoLogic has also added something they call Dynamic Virtual Sub Technology to the Spirit.. The changes to save space also reduced the price down to o140(inc. VAT)/US249 dollars. In this review we will take an in-depth look at the Spirit, which just might be the perfect system for people with limited space who are looking to use their PC as an MP3 or CD juke box!

The FMOD 3.2 Sound and Music Programmers Library is out now. This release is a big one as the FMOD 3.2 sports support for EAX 2 and A3D 3.0. They are also giving away a couple of soundcards to celebrate this big release. Here is the feature list ripped from their web site.DX7 support added. This adds more hardware voices than previously possible before.EAX 2.0 support added! Go nuts on those advanced reverb parameters!A3D 3.0 support added! Realtime full duplex recording support added! Volume ramping / de-clicking software mixer added! MMX quality mixer speed increased AGAIN to crazy speeds! Check out the new comparison charts. Callbacks and FSOUND_Stream_GetTime now are now latency adjusted, so when you get a callback or read a time value, it is relevant to when you HEAR the sound, not when it is mixed. FSOUND_SetMinHardwareChannels and FSOUND_SetMaxHardwareChannels added. Great for controlling 3d hardware resources! Delphi and Visual Basic interface added! (these are still in beta) New documentation layout! Tutorials section and neater documentation file! They also note that FMOD has been thoroughly tested and improved in real game environments and is solid as a rock! A3D update for Soldier of Fortune - Mark @ 21:06 EST
We had already reported that the EAX fix that was supposed to be in the last Soldier of Fortune patch was pulled at the last minute (but will be back in the soon to come next patch). Well, thanks to Travis McPherson's pointer to the offical SofF forum we can let you know that that according to Jake Simpson, Aureal is aware of the problems people with Montego II (Quadzilla) are having and between Raven and Aureal they should have it licked in the next patch update.
MidiLand S4 7100 5.1 Speaker System Review - Mark @ 20:22 EST
3Dhardware.net has posted a very positive review of the MidiLand S4 7100 5.1 ready speaker system. Aside from the usual impressions, the review contains an excellent overview of the system. One thing worth noting is, as per the manual, the review notes that the satellites start to crossover to the subwoofer at 4 kHz. Again, as the review notes, that is a rather high crossover frequency and based on my own testing with a frequency test CD and sound level meter it seems that the satellites don't start to notably attenuate until about 150 Hz (which is actually quite low) so the gap that the manual would have you believe exists, is not really there. Its either a typo in the manual (which has more than its share) or the attenuation from 4 kHz is incredibly low. My last comment is with respect to the comments on cost-performance ratio. After exchanging a couple of emails with the reviewer I can add that the context for those comments is not that the 7100 offers the outright best quality sound on the market (as they don't). Its more that for a street price of around $150 you get a 5.1 ready system, that can also be configured to 4.1 and other modes, a bunch of really neat extras like the control module, the tilt design of the satellites and other nice touches like gold-plated connections along with good quality sound. I can add that the 7100 can put out a very high sound pressure level (louder, but not better, than the ProMedia that's currently shipping). Look for lots more on what I think of this system and how it holds up to our own tests later this month. In the mean time you can read about the system's abilities over at 3DHardware.
RioPort Licenses AAC From Dolby Laboratories - Mikael @ 17:53 EST
Dolby Laboratories announced that RioPort has licensed Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) technology for use in its RioPort Audio Manager software and related production and delivery tools. AAC is the latest audio coder standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as part of the MPEG specification. Compared with MP3 (MPEG Layer-3), AAC, provides, according to Dolby, higher- quality music while requiring approximately 30% less storage and/or bandwidth. You can find many more interesting details about the deal and AAC if you read the press release. In a separate press release InterTrust Technologies today announced its strong support for RioPort, Inc.'s license of the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) mentioning that RioPort will now be able to provide the market with high-quality tools and player products that are SDMI-compliant and MetaTrust-Certified(TM).

Monster Sound MX400 review - Mikael @ 16:22 EST
Digital Web 3D has posted a review of Diamond's MX400. They found it to be clearly better than the Live but behind the Vortex2. I'm not sure exactly what they put into sound quality. If it's 3D sound using headphones or 2-speakers I agree that the Live is clearly behind both cards using Sensaura and Vortex2 based cards. I don't think that's the case if you use 4-speakers though. For more about my impression about Sensaura you can check out our review of Guillemot Maxi Sound Fortissimo. Based on some testing of the MX400 using the DMX card I can say the reverb and 3D sound quality are almost identical for the MX400 and Fortissimo. The review also includes benchmark using Quake3 and I don't think that's good benchmark. It tells you how A3D2 games will perform on these cards but since almost every other A3D2 game also support DS3D with EAX it's not that interesting comparison. Also worth nothing that A3D doesn't seem to work on the Vortex2 if you install the latest patch for Quake3. A couple of other bits the $49 price is not the SRP and there is really no Sensaura API. D-Link DMP-100 Mp3 Player Review - Mikael @ 16:18 EST
Gamers Depot has posted his review of the D-Link MP3 Player, DMP-100. Key features are voice recording, 32MB of storage space, memory slot, parallel port interface, earphones and of course playback of MP3 files. All this for $130 isn't bad and the detailed review is also overall positive. News Source: AGN Hardware

Using sound to enhance atmosphere and mood - Mikael @ 17:07 EST
Designer James Agay currently working on the upcoming A3D 2.0 and DS3D with EAX supporting Summoner has written a bit on PCI.ign how he use sound in the levels to enhance atmosphere and mood. Here's an intersting bitWithin our in-house editor we can define where a sound occurs in 3D space, at what volume, over what radius and how quickly it decays. This allows for faint noises over huge areas that can overlap to build a soundscape of howling winds, running water or city life, as well as sounds directly linked to objects, creatures or events. Sounds like the sound part of Summoner will be great. News Source: AGN
Playing DVDs on your PC article - Mikael @ 17:00 EST
Computers.com have posted a new how-to article on what you need to buy to play DVDs on your PC and some tips what to look for. They also have some installation tips. They completely missed the DD 5.1 aspect of DVDs and also seems to think the CD-audio cable from the DVD-rom have something to do with the sound when playing DVD movies, that's not the case. - Added support for audio cards that only support EAX 1.0
- Improved sound propagation throughout the Bank, Courier, Trail of Blood, Precious Cargo, Life of the Party and the Precious Cargo levels.
- Added more Garrett voice overs to the Bank level
You can grab the patch from 3dfiles. If you haven't bought the game yet you can buy it from Gamestop.
Halo Preview - Mikael @ 16:14 EST
Tech Extreme has written a piece about the upcoming Halo where among other things they discuss Halo's sound engine. One other game that had a sound engine based on physics is Trespasser which also had one of the best 3D sound engine implementation I've heard. Gameplay not quite as good though :-).Halo is expected to support A3D 3.0 and while it's not Creative's list yet I would expect it to support at least 3D sound on the Live.
Boston Acoustics BA4800 Early Impressions - Mark @ 09:30 EST
I have just posted my early impressions of the BA4800 which is the latest entry into the multimedia market from Boston Acoustics. Its also their first entry into the now very competitive 4.1 market. After a couple of weeks of use I am very impressed with the system. For the reasons why, check out our early impressions section (where you can also read about several other systems with reviews on the go).
MidiLand S4-8200 Review - Mark @ 09:27 EST
Sharky Extreme has posted a pretty nice review of MidiLand's S4-8200 Dolby Digital 5.1 system. I have not actually heard the 8200s yet but I have heard the S4-7100 and the ADS-2000 decoder that ships with the 8200s and their comments are pretty much in line with what I would have expected. Just one comment.I think I bit too much is made of watts RMS. As we have shown, driver efficiency is at least as important as watts RMS in determining how loud a system can play and while I am not disagreeing that the 8200 is loud, I am saying that in general, its possible for systems with less watts RMS to be louder than systems with more watts RMS. Thanks to Wood (GTAudiophile) Powell for the pointer.
Midiland S4 4060 Review - Mark @ 09:23 EST
Noeseeker has posted a nicereview of the Midiland S4 4060 2.1 speaker system. I found the following bit quite interesting as its not something I have seen referenced before:With the S4 series, MidiLand hopes to enable gamers and music lovers alike to enjoy quality, at a much reduced price. Toward that end, the company R&D has been able to come up with a few solutions to the cost factor of their speakers. The most notable change is the material used to construct the new satellite speakers - these new sats are smaller and lighter thanks to a material that MidiLand calls Platallic. The new material is designed to recreate the same structural and tonal qualities of a medium dense wood fibre(MDF) enclosure, at a much reduced cost. The result is a compact, lightweight satellite that is easily wall mounted and is said to have acoustic properties similar to a satellite made from MDF. The system uses the same satellites as the S4-7100 that I am currently testing and the subwoofer design also appears to be similar. Where the systems will differ is of course in the amplification and number of channels and everything else associated with those differences.
High-end PC Buying guide - Mark @ 08:05 EST
3D Spotlight has posted their first edition of their High-end PC Buying Guide. In the guide they build two different systems, sharing a lot of the components between systems. When it comes to sound if you have read our recent ProMedia / Crossfire comparison article you will know that depending on what you are going to use your speakers for I don't agree with some of their comments. Its also worth noting that if you won't use the LiveDrive or extra software that comes with the Platinum, them you can can save some money by going with other versions of the Live (or other cards).

Yamaha Debuts New Powered Multimedia Speaker System - Mikael @ 22:59 EST
Yamaha today announced that they introduces the new YST-M40 two-piece powered speaker system at Retail Vision 2000. They claim it's designed for today's computer multimedia technology and deliver deliver professional sonic performance without the need for a subwoofer. Sort of doubt it considering the ESP of $59 and the given frequency response of 70-20 kHz isn't exactly matching systems with a subwoofer. Anyway the system will be available in April. You can find more info in the press release
Sonique 1.5 released - Mikael @ 22:49 EST
Steve Edwards let us know that a new version (1.5) of Sonique was released yesterday. Sonique is an audio player supporting many different formats including MP3 and according to Sonique it's the best MP3 decoder available. Not tried it yet so not sure exactly if it's really much difference compared to Winamp but if you download it you could judge for yourself.
A3D files at A3D Fan - Mikael @ 22:06 EST
I think we mentioned most of this before but can be worth to mention again. A3D Fan offers various A3D related files for download including- Updated A3D 3.0 demos
- The Aureal Bank Editor
- WDM drivers for Vortex 1 and Vortex 2
(for Windows 98 SE)
- WDM drivers for all Vortex chipsets
(for Windows 2000)
- A3D 2.0-supporting Unreal patch
Worth noting that the Windows 2000 drivers are the same Aureal posted on their website except you don't have to download the demos. When it comes to WDM drivers for Windows 98SE it's just a modification of the inf files and they will perform far worse on Windows98SE than the 2048 VXD drivers will so no point getting them other than wanting to try play around with WDM drivers. You will find more details at A3D Fan News Source: Vortex of Sound
Labtec LCS-2514 Speakers Review - Mikael @ 21:31 EST
If you are looking for a cheap (below $100) 4-speaker system the Labtec LCS-2514 is another interesting option, costing only $80. Haven't been many reviews of it so far but today 3dhardware.net has posted their impressions of it. They found it to offer sound quality similar to the FPS1000.
Midiland Mli-490 Review - Mikael @ 21:25 EST
Another review of the MidiLand Mli-490 has been posted on 3dgn.com and just like the review at Boomgames they are impressed with the quality considering the $99 price tag. Just a couple things worth noting when looking at the specs is that you need an external decoder to get any Dolby Prologic or Dolby Digital out of this system, what makes it different from most other 4-speaker system is that it feature a LFE input. Soundblaster compatability refers only to that it has front and rear inputs. Finally the frequency range numbers are most likely not accurate, I can't imagine that the sub produce decent bass down to 20 Hz. I would also say if the cross over really is at 350 Hz I think it's way too high.

Midiland MLi-490 Review - Mikael @ 21:11 EST
BoomGames has posted their impressions of the MidiLand MLi-490 and they were very impressed of the quality and price ($100). Never heard the system so not sure how it compares to Creative's, Altec Lansing's or Labtec's low-end 4.1 speaker system which also all have SPR of $100 or less.

The TechZone has posted a review of AOpen's DVD-1040 Pro. The name comes from the 10X DVD speed and 40X CD-ROM speed. Worth noting is that the drive has a digital SPDIF out (for CD-audio) and that it comes bundled with WinDVD, no mention if supports multichannel Dolby Digital audio beyond SPDIF pass-thru but most likely not. Aureal Files Chapter 11 - Mikael @ 17:35 EST
Aureal just announced that they has filed a petition for relief under chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code with the Bankruptcy Court in Oakland, California in an effort to facilitate a reorganization of its financial affairs. For all those not familiar with what chapter 11 it means that Aureal is declaring that they are bankrupt and that it stops their investors from liquidating their remaining assets until it is either deemed that they can either sell the company, restructure the company (to make profitable), or give up (in which case they would liquidate all assets). I saw that Vortex of Sound heard rumours that the investors continue to feel that Aureal can still be salvaged but not sure exactly why they think that. I seriously doubt it will be anything like the Aureal we have seen so far.
Sonic Vortex 2 review - Mikael @ 00:06 EST
Insane Gamers has posted a review of VideoLogic's SonicVortex2 card comparing it to the SB Live!Value. Just one thing worth noting what's done on the host with the Vortex2 is the calculations of the reflections for wavetracing games and the reverb when it comes to 3D sound, the basic 3D sound is done in hardware just like with the Live. Digital Audio Breakthrough Redefines Personal Computers - Mikael @ 18:19 EST
That's what JAM Technologies claims with the introduction of a system that should allow digital music, DTV, DVD movies, and digital radio through a personal computer rival the performance of a high end living room stereo. JAM's REVA (TM) True Fidelity (R) delivers high resolution audio and eliminates the cost and space consumed by separate entertainment appliances. REVA True Fidelity is the only technology that produces high-quality, high-power, pure digital audio amplification with continuous average power of up to 25 watts per channel into 8 ohms from a personal computer using only the 5-volt power supply and any conventional, non-self-powered speakers. Because it is LSI-based, it is small, efficient, powerful, cool-running, and quickly integrated on to desktop computer system boards and notebook computer PC Cards. It eliminates digital-to-analog converters, DC/DC converters, analog signal pathways on conventional sound cards, and separate power supplies containing hot, bulky transformers. By replacing these now-superfluous and costly components, REVA True Fidelity allows the computer industry to eliminate the problems inherent in analog amplification and reduce costs at the same time. Check out the full press release for more details

ACS54 review - Mikael @ 17:02 EST
hardCOREware has slapped up their impressions of the ACS54 comparing it to the FPS1000. They complain about the hiss and lack of subwoofer control but overall pretty happy with the system. I didn't find hiss to be a significant problem with the ACS54 but it will depend on how close to them you sit and how much other back ground noise you have. About the lack of subwoofer control I think it would be nice to have especially for music but I don't think it's too much bass for games. News Source: Anandtech

The Perfect System - Mikael @ 09:42 EST
Tech Extreme has posted what components they think you should buy to build the perfect system or as close to it as you can get. It's not just a simple list of the best product, it also includes explanations how they reached their decision and some other options you have. It of course includes a soundcard featuring 3D sound. One thing I think is worth noting when it comes to Vortex2 soundcards is that we don't know if there will be any more driver updates which is a major concern for anyone that's intend to play games under Windows 2000.
Sanyo Electronics Corporation, Texas Instruments, and NEC Computer become Dolby Headphone technology Licensees - Mikael @ 07:21 EST

Aureal tries to hang on following executive exodus - Mikael @ 21:35 EST
That's the title of an article at Electronic Buyers' News that covers the current situation at Aureal. Thanks to Scott Gray for the pointer. New bits include confirmation from Turtle Beach that they still get chips, 4 of the 5 board members has left the board, only 50 employees was still working last week of once 200 and as late as Nov last year Aureal had 128 people employed. They have some rather doubtful rumours from one one employee at a distributor claiming that a major semiconductor manufacturer had bought the company and one former Aureal employee said the walkout was probably set in motion because of serious discussions with Creative. I'm pretty sure the last one is just speculation and the first is doubful considering it's over a week old and no announcement has been made yet. Obviously a deal wasn't done then. Can be worth mentioning that Turtle Beach also told us today that they have no worries about chip supplies right now and that Terratec last week said they think their current supply will last until summer and they intend to replace the XLerate Pro with the XFire this spring anyway. Xitel only said they are currently evaluation the situation while VideoLogic hasn't offered any comments.
Altec Lansing Announces New DD 5.1 Speakers for 2000 - Mikael @ 20:29 EST
Altec Lansing Technologies, Inc. will showcase its newest products for 2000 and current line of audio peripherals, including a new sound system maximized for home theater and gaming playback, at Spring RetailVision in Beverly Hills, CA this week. The products being showcased include the ATP6, ATP3, ACS56, ACS66i, the VoicePod(TM) and the InteliMic(TM). ACS56 is a 4-speaker system that we recently reviewed. ATP3 is a 3-piece system and the ATP is a six piece sound solution ideal for home theater, gaming, music and video gaming. The system has front, rear and surround satellites, a center channel and a subwoofer, a complete discrete surround sound experience boasting a total of 75 watts. No mention of the ACS66i but from a press release earlier this year we know it's 2.1 system for iMacs. VoicePod is a USB-based PC peripheral that allows users to easily record and attach high-quality voice files to documents and e-mail messages with the touch of a button. The InteliMic is a digital microphone that can be modified to focus voice capture in a user-controlled area. Utilizing Altec Lansing's Clarix(TM) set of noise reduction and voice capture technologies, the InteliMic is able to digitally eliminate ambient or extraneous sounds and process only the user's voice. You can find a few more tidbits in the press release but no info about the release dates or price for the ATP6.

The Eminent Technologies' LFT-11 speaker review - Mikael @ 20:07 EST
GamePC has posted a review of The Eminent Technologies' LFT-11 speaker set which according to the review offers excellent audio quality. It features a subwoofer with 2 6.5" drivers, two flat panel speaker satellites, an AMC amplifier and price tag of $500. The review also mentions you can buy an additional pair of LFT-11 satellites but not the cost for it. If you never heard about The Eminent Technologies before the following bit should clue you inEminent Technologies is basically a very small company down in Florida, who's products take a long time to get, not to mention they're very expensive, but they're worth it. Most people wonder why it takes around 6 weeks to get a pair of these speakers, the straight answer is that each speaker and subwoofer is made by hand to suit that person's individual needs. In this day and age, you don't often see super-high quality hand-made products anymore, and to be honest, I didn't expect much of these speakers when they showed up on my desk. Fortunately, I was wrong. Not sure exactly what these needs includes since the review only mention they can be made to match the colour of your desk. One thing I stronly disagree with in this review is the following bit:There is a very small market for people who actually can hear a difference between a $50 pair of speakers and a $500 pair. It may be a small market that's prepared to pay for it, especially in this case when they don't even beat the $250 ProMedia, but most people should be able to hear and appreciate the difference. If that wasn't the case movie theaters wouldn't spend as money on speakers as they do.

Sound Crashes in Allegiance - Mikael @ 19:58 EST
If you experience crashes in the DS3D supporting Allegiance when enabling 3D sound the following e-mail that Allegiance Zone received from Microsoft Research's Joel "Solap" Dehlin could be interesting/dissapointingThese are driver crashes and there's nothing we can do about them until the vendors come out with new drivers.~ In the short term, people can just turn hardware sound acceleration OFF. According to Allegiance Zone it's primarily related to Aureal audio cards but possible it happens on other DS3D supporting soundcards as well. As you may know it's currently uncertain if we will see any more Vortex2 drivers. It will depend on who if any buys Aureal. News Source: Voodoo Extreme
Direct interview - Mikael @ 19:55 EST
CGO has posted an interview with Microsoft's Ted Hase on DirectX and the future of Windows gaming. Here's a few interesting snips about audioSound and networking support on most current and next generation consoles appears to be rather anemic and clearly defines an area of competitive advantage for the Windows platform. Our advancements in networking and audio should cement the Windows platform's lead in these areas. [snip] Currently Windows far exceeds the capabilities of the PlayStation 2 in audio and networking News Source: Voodoo Extreme
DigiTheatre DTS review @ Sharky - Mikael @ 09:58 EST
Thanks to Wood Powell for letting us know that Sharky Extreme has posted a review of VideoLogic's DigiTheatre DTS system. The system uses the same drivers as the Crossfire for 4 of the satelites, the center is slightly larger. The subwoofer is the same as the Sirocco Pro subwofer. As you would guess Sharky Extreme found the audio quality to be quite good. The review also covers if it's really any difference between Dolby Digital and DTS versions of DVD movies letting people spot the difference in blind tests. What surprised me in the review is that they at the end says "Price is excellent for a full DTS system, but average to below average if used just as a DD 5.1 system." when they found the basic DigiTheatre (2 months ago) to be "At the volume levels that we consider "comfortable, to slightly louder than comfortable" the DigiTheater's satellites and subwoofer performed at the level of a speaker system costing almost double what the entire DigiTheater package sells for. ". I expected the quality of the DigiTheatre DTS to be considerable better even for just Dolby Digital DVDs, well matching the $200 higher price tage. A couple of other points worth mentioning is that the DigiTheatre DTS is available in UK now for SRP o400 while in US it's not expected until early June and DigiTheatre.com list it for $599. Speaking of DigiTheatre.com you may be interested to know they currently sell the basic DigiTheatre for only $319 now while supplies last.

Creative has released new Windows 95/98/NT4 drivers for the Dxr3. They will not work on Windows 2000. Here's what's new- Esprit Navigator program for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT4.0
- Improved TV-Out quality for PAL systems (Europe)
- Improve TV-Out quality for PAL-TV in Europe
- Better support for MPEG-2 files playback
I've no idea what the difference is between 2 and 3 but I guess improved PAL support includes improved play back of NTSC DVDs on PAL TVs that doesn't support PAL-60. According to newsgroups posts it now works about the same as Hollywood+, which means acceptable but not perfect. You can download the drivers from Creative's site
