All about Aureal's technology including the APIs (A3D 1.0, 2.0, 3.0), sound cards, chips (including the Vortex 2 and Motorola DSP), speakers and anything else you can think of with respect to Aureal's technology. For support questions check out our support FAQ.
It depends on the functionality and the card. Adding software reverb support does add CPU overhead, although Aureal says that they have optimized this a fair bit.
There are some new features of A3D 3.0 that will run in hardware on some cards, but will scale down to the available resources. Just like A3D 2.0, the new features will be done in hardware on the high-end cards and in software on the lower-end. This is the natural progression of the API, engine and hardware.
The bottom line is we won't know what A3D 3.0 will perform like on the Vortex 1 or 2 until we get to test it out. - Updated: November 29, 1999
