Quad mode is used when you have 4 speakers, to address each speaker independently.

The 2 speaker modes also send output to all 4 speakers, but the sound is just duplicated; everything that plays out the front left speaker will play out the rear left speaker – everything that plays out the front right speaker will play out the rear right speaker.
