Logitech Enters PC Sound Market

Logitech Enters PC Sound Market with SoundMan Family of Compact, Powerful Multimedia Speakers
Linear Magnetic Drive (LIMAD(tm)) Technology Provides Increased Sonic Range, Better Bass, in Space-Saving Form Factor Designed for the Desktop

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 1998-- Logitech (NASDAQ:LOGIY - news; Switzerland:LOGZ), international market leader in human interface devices designed to provide a natural, intuitive link between people and computers, today announced the SoundMan(R) family of multimedia speakers for the PC.

The product lineup -- which includes the SoundMan Extreme(tm) hi-fi speaker system, SoundMan Pro and SoundMan hi-fi compact satellite speaker sets and the SoundMan Bass add-on compact subwoofer -- provides high-quality audio for PC games, music and multimedia in compact, powerful units designed to maximize performance in a small space.

The SoundMan products are available this month as retail systems from Logitech dealers and distributors. In addition, the SoundMan Bass subwoofer is available as an upgrade to the SoundMan Pro configuration or any other satellite speakers.

All SoundMan products incorporate Linear Magnetic Drive (LIMAD) technology developed by soundmatters, inc., a San Francisco-based provider of high-end audio technology. This proprietary approach uses rare-earth neodymium magnets to accurately reproduce the full spectrum of sound in extremely compact units.

Speakers with LIMAD technology provide output at all frequencies in proportion to the input and handle a wide dynamic range, including low frequency sounds that are difficult to accurately reproduce, such as classical music, male voices, cellos, and pianos.

As the top-of-the-line model, SoundMan Extreme utilizes the compact subwoofer to reproduce low frequencies with exceptional fidelity. In the SoundMan Extreme system, LIMAD's slim-driver technology provides a large force-to-mass ratio that results in the reproduction of rich sound detail throughout the entire frequency spectrum. It also is able to accommodate sudden changes in input frequencies without distortion. Although the total weight of the SoundMan Extreme is less than ten pounds, it delivers an impressive 50 watts RMS power with a frequency response of 28Hz to 20,000Hz.

The SoundMan family brings a new level of audio quality and technological innovation to any multimedia computer. All SoundMan speaker models are magnetically shielded. An integrated power supply eliminates the need for bulky external transformers and enables increased responsiveness under fluctuating power demands. To conserve power, an automatic ``sleep'' feature switches the speakers on only when sound output from the PC is detected.

``Today's powerful multimedia PC systems, increasingly sophisticated games, as well as DVD video and audio are driving the need for sound systems that can provide high-quality output without sacrificing limited desk space,'' said Jimmy Yau, Logitech global product marketing manager for multimedia audio. ``We found that most multimedia speakers rely on nonlinear magnetic drive technology, which typically compresses audio output below 150 cycles and results in bass distortion.

``To overcome this limitation, we chose soundmatters' LIMAD(tm) technology for our SoundMan family. The result is accurate reproduction of a wide range of the sound spectrum in a very slim, compact subwoofer and satellite speakers that are small enough to be truly portable.''

Founded in 1981, Logitech designs, manufactures and markets human interface devices that connect people and computers in an intuitive and natural way.
