| End-users
to benefit from new technologies and partnerships developed by EAR |
| 04/09/99, Knoxville, TN
-- Extreme Audio Reality, Inc. (EAR), a privately-owned company based in Secaucus, New
Jersey, has begun development on Level 2 of their well-received Interactive Around-Sound®
(IAS) audio engine. The new version targets untapped revenue potential for both EAR and
their development partners while providing consumers with an expandable audio platform
designed to take advantage of PC/CE market convergence. "Most of the technology developed for this new version was prompted by requests made by our end-users." said Glenn Arnold, VP of Technology. "When you have several thousand e-mails asking for 'MP3' or 'force feedback'... it's hard to ignore. That is why we added PIM." The Plug-In Module (PIM) interface allows anyone to develop an add-on component for the audio engine and attach that component to a side-channel; events added to the side-channel can be independent of the audio or they can interact with the audio events. For example, if a user has an Aura USB Bass Shaker attached to his chair and has the Aura PIM installed, IAS2 programs will be able to trigger the Bass Shaker during explosions, etc. There are PIMs and PITs (Plug-In Template) currently in development for ShadowFactor's BattleCom, the Aura Bass Shaker, and I-Force force feedback devices (i.e., Logitech). Other features that are being added to the audio engine core include DirectMusic and YellowBook support, real-time MP3 decoding, virtualized environments, and cardless audio support. The core is being streamlined to improve the Level 1 features as well, including the existing strategy for supporting multi-speaker hardware. Shipping with the version 2.0 software package will be the Home Theater Analyzer which will replace the current control panel. In addition to CD, DVD, and MIDI setup routines, this utility can automatically configure the user's audio hardware to acoustically balance the room based on actual speaker placement. Another addition to the control panel is the MP3 JukeBox, a utility that allows the user to replace the regular game soundtrack with a group of previously selected MP3 files. IAS version 2.0 should begin beta-testing in August of this year, with the official release scheduled for October 1, 1999.
