Aureal Announces Issuance of 3D Audio Patent

New Technology Allows for Affordable and Complete Presentation of Interactive Sound

Fremont, CA – October 7, 1998 – (AURL: OTC Bulletin Board) Aureal™ Semiconductor Inc. today announced the issuance of U.S. Patent Number 5,802,180 for a "Method and Apparatus for Efficient Presentation of High-Quality, Three-Dimensional Audio, Including Ambient Effects."

Aureal’s technical innovations have now earned 19 patents for the company. With more than 39 additional audio patent applications on file, Aureal is committed to its position of industry leadership in providing users with a complete 3D audio experience. The company’s collection of interactive audio patents now covers the measurement of HRTFs (Head Related Transfer Functions), the rendering of HRTFs, and advanced architectures for the implementation of HRTF capabilities.

"This patent represents another milestone in Aureal’s effort to develop an efficient low-cost technology to present interactive immersive audio without compromising quality," said Scott Foster, Chief Technical Officer at Aureal. "Essentially, the passive effects of the virtual environment being presented have been rolled into the HRTF rendering itself, rather than being computed separately as is usually done. The result is a first class complete presentation with very little additional cost to environment effects such as partial reflections, occlusions and atmospheric absorption."

Aureal’s portfolio of audio technology now provides end-to-end solutions for 3D audio, including measurement, rendering, and future advancement of 3D audio through Aureal’s A3D technology. A3D was initially developed for NASA and is backed by over a decade of psycho-acoustic research and development.
