| With DR Box 1, TerraTec
Electronic presents the first worldwide USB digital radio receiver. The DR Box 1 can be
connected via USB to the PC or to the stereo equipment without a computer. At the same
time, the DR Box 1 from TerraTec is as simple and easy to operate as standard radios.
Naturally, automatic station search, sound control, analog and digital output and 24
station memories are available. The advantages offered by digital transmission are clear and plain: crystal clear sound and free of all interferences. Add to that additional information and services from the stations, which cannot be received on FM. This information is broadcast parallel to the radio program using images and sound. It offers not just title and artist. It also transmits tour dates, information about current CDs or program information. These program-associated data services (PAD) are fully utilized by DR Box 1. And, of course, a PC connection offers a series of additional options: Program-related and independent information are presented in HTML format. The connection of a PC enables the user to receive different stations at the same time. This allows for recording, while listening to a different station. Not only can radio programs received be recorded in analog form as usual, the TerraTec DR Box 1 also records it in real time as WAV or MP2 file and stores it on the hard disk. Recording radio programs can also be started automatically using the convenient timer function of the DR Box 1 software. By the way: the radio program can be recorded in compressed form as MP3 using the bundled MusicMatch Jukebox software and immediately edited using Wavelab Lite-e.g. cutting. Using the additional data that are broadcast directly with the radio program, it is possible to implement "viewing radio." The add-on modules may consist of graphics (e.g. from a web cam in a station's studio), dynamic label (similar to the well-known RDS radio text) and additional multimedia data formats like HTML contents. On top of that, contents of non-program-associated data (NPAD) are received and displayed in form of HTML pages-such as guides to regional events, weather forecast or stock exchange data. Heiko Meertz, General Manager of TerraTec Electronic, considers the future of digital radio to be very positive: "By now, the digital radio standard has spread throughout the world. Even Germany, where regulated operation currently exists, is expected to have 95% coverage in three years. And in a few years, FM will be turned off and replaced by this standard." Technical details:
