Charter Communications Commits to New Motorola DCP501 Home Theater System

Charter is First Broadband Network Operator to Announce Deployment of High-Performance Entertainment Platform

NEW ORLEANS, May 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Broadband Communications Sector announced today that Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR), the fourth-largest U.S. cable operator, will begin distributing the Motorola DCP501 in Charter markets at the end of second quarter 2002, becoming the first broadband network operator to commit to deployment of the platform.

The Motorola DCP501 Home Theater System combines a DVD/CD/MP3 player, digital amplifier with 5x100 watts per channel, AM/FM stereo receiver, and a DCT2000 interactive digital cable receiver in a single, space-saving, plug-and-play unit for high-performance home entertainment. The Motorola DCP501 also provides the gateway to interactive services such as video-on-demand (VOD), local-source information, interactive program guides, more channels of impulse pay-per-view movies and events, Internet access, and more. The Motorola DCP technology is based on the Motorola DCT2000 digital set-top -- the most widely deployed set-top in the world -- and is upgradeable through the same download mechanism as the DCT2000. The Motorola DCP501 supports RF return, and can also support telco with the addition of a Starfone(TM) modem.

Motorola is showcasing the DCP501 at the National Cable and Telecommunications Association's (NCTA) Cable 2002 (May 5-8, Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Booth #1623).

"The key to enticing and retaining digital cable customers is providing value -- and with a DVD/CD/MP3 player; a 5x100 watts per channel amplifier; and an AM/FM stereo combined with a Motorola DCT2000, the Motorola DCP501 is equipped to provide a great deal of added value to Charter's customers -- particularly those who are high-end audio-stereo enthusiasts," said Dwight Sakuma, senior director of retail channels/product development for Motorola Broadband. "Now, these customers can get the high-performance entertainment features they want in one space-saving, affordable unit. And because the DCP501 is connected to their broadband line, they'll also have a gateway to the latest interactive services. We believe that this combination will be a powerful tool to help Charter increase its digital penetration and reduce churn."

"The DCP501 provides our customers with an economical, top-quality home-theater system that provides them with more entertainment choices and control over their home entertainment experience. In return, we gain the increased satisfaction and loyalty of our customers," said Stephen Silva, Charter's executive vice president and chief technical officer. "The role of today's broadband operator is evolving from providing video services to a full portfolio of communication services. Motorola understands that cable's ability to enhance the way customers enjoy entertainment, communicate and stay connected in their homes is what gives us our competitive edge, and they are developing innovative and new product categories like the DCP501 to give us an even greater advantage over satellite."

Motorola designed the DCP501 in 2001 to create a win-win business model for both cable operators and retailers, while also providing a new home-entertainment solution that offers consumers a more compelling value proposition than the DBS set-tops and DVD/CD combination units currently on retail shelves. The DCP501 includes the following in-demand technology components:

  • DVD/CD/MP3 player
  • Motorola's DCT2000 interactive digital cable receiver
  • Audio/Video stereo receiver and amplifier (5x100 watts/channel)
  • Dolby® Digital Decoder, 5.1 channels
  • Dolby Pro Logic II technology
  • Digital Theater Sound (DTS®)
  • SRS surround sound
  • Composite video outputs for all input sources
  • Tripath Technology TA 3020 Class T digital amplifiers for optimum sound quality
  • Plays CD, CD-R, CD-RW encoded disks
