Boston Acoustics -R- Expands Speaker Offerings With Extreme-Power BT -TM- Series

Renowned Audio Systems Manufacturer Introduces BT1, BT2, and BT Subwoofer Models, Providing High-Output CINEMA Sound in a HOME Theater Package

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 2002--Boston Acoustics, Inc. (NASDAQ: BOSA - News), a premier audio systems manufacturer, today introduced its BT line of high-power, high-output home theater speakers.

The main speakers, BT1 and BT2, are high-powered L/C/R (left/center/right) units that will be unveiled, along with a BT subwoofer, at the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) Expo 2002, booth #527. Under initial pricing, BT1 speakers are $1,000 each and BT2s are $1,800 each, with the BT1200 subwoofer at $1,400.

"The BTs and complementary subwoofer are testament to the commitment Boston Acoustics has to providing audio solutions for any environment and every level of audio enthusiast," said David Kroll, director of Boston Acoustics' Custom Group. "Reflective of the design of this product, the BT buyer is, without question, in the market for a `no compromise' home theater package."

Kroll added that the BT's formidable front stage sound is given an ample bass foundation with the BT subwoofer.

"The parametric EQ built into the BT1200 makes it very easy to optimize bass response in a wide variety of locations," said Kroll. "This feature also helps to eliminate `standing waves.' "

Both the BT1 and BT2 theater speakers, and the BT Subwoofer, are designed for installing inside custom-built or pre-built A/V cabinetry, or inside a theater stage. Included in each one of the BT models are ergonomic features to help simplify installation: Die-cast "finger pulls" positioned at the front of each speaker enclosure allow easy ingress/egress of tight cabinet spaces; supplied neoprene pads prevent scratching and allow for smooth slide-in positioning of the speaker; all cable input terminals are recessed; the height of the BT1, width of the BT2, and width of the BT Subwoofer are all standard component size of 17 1/2"; and lastly, the BT Subwoofer's controls are front-mounted for easy access after installation.

"One of the most useful features of the BT1 and BT2 is the rotating baffle," said Kroll. "Taken from the same technology used in our top-of-the-line VRi593 in-wall speakers, the BT1 and BT2's MT [midrange-tweeter] baffle has the ability to rotate 90 degrees for horizontal or vertical placement in cabinetry--maintaining the proper sonic alignment of the midrange and tweeter." Kroll adds that the baffle may also be angled for more accurate imaging when the speaker is far off-axis. This same baffle is built out of cast aluminum to provide rigidity and tremendous thermal mass for heat dissipation in the midrange and tweeter.

Both the BT1 and BT2 share Boston's high-output 1-inch aluminum dome, neodymium tweeter, and new 4 1/2-inch neodymium midrange. Powerful bass is provided by the BTs new high-wattage, 8-inch cast neodymium woofer. The BT2 houses two woofers while the BT1 employs one.

"One of the demands we placed on the design of the BT1 and 2 was high sensitivity," Kroll explained. "Ultimately, this benefits the power efficiency of the speaker system."

Additional features include an EQ switch for use behind a perforated projection screen, a boundary compensation switch, a frameless metal grille that provides maximum protection of the driver with no surfaces to cause diffraction, and bi-wireable and bi-ampable inputs.
