Users will enjoy rich, immersive Dolby sound that transforms the PC entertainment experience when using the new Windows XP Media Center Edition |
| SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS
WIRE)--Oct. 29, 2002-- Dolby Laboratories, the world leader in multichannel audio
technologies, announced that it has teamed with Microsoft and Dolby licensees to enable
easy access to its audio technologies from PCs with Windows XP Media Center Edition.
Dolby's announcement coincides with today's launch of Windows XP Media Center Edition via
the HP Media Center PC to consumers in North America. Microsoft has made it easy for consumers to access and control Dolby audio technologies incorporated in software DVD players included with Windows XP Media Center Edition. These applications are currently available to computer manufacturers from Dolby licensees Cyberlink, Intervideo, and NVIDIA. Consumers will see a DVD faceplate within the Media Center experience that bears the Dolby logo, indicating the quality assurance of the Dolby brand and providing the richer, fuller and more real entertainment experience that Dolby multichannel technologies deliver. "Dolby sound technologies are an important part of the entertainment experiences that Windows XP Media Center Edition offers," said Kevin Eagan, General Manager of the Windows eHome Division, Microsoft Corp. "With Dolby's reputation in home theater and personal surround sound systems, Microsoft is pleased to enable easy access to Dolby sound technologies on the PC through Windows XP Media Center Edition." "Dolby is pleased that Microsoft is once again enabling Dolby audio technologies to ensure that their new products provide the immersive, engaging and, high-quality entertainment experience that consumers expect," said Bob Brummer, Director of Technology Strategy, Dolby Laboratories. "Microsoft has made it easy for consumers to access and use Dolby audio technologies on their PC. From these interfaces, consumers can access not only Dolby Digital, but also other advanced Dolby technologies such as Dolby Headphone and Dolby Virtual Speaker." How Dolby Technologies Are Accessible Through Windows XP Media Center Edition With Windows XP Media Center Edition, consumers can easily manage and control the comprehensive set of features offered by Dolby audio technologies in their PCs. For instance, they can configure their DVD audio settings without leaving the remote control-driven Media Center experience. Dolby® Digital is a standard audio technology in every DVD player, and -- depending on which DVD player ships with the PC or is installed after purchase by the user -- players can also include Dolby Headphone technology, Dolby Pro Logic® II, and the new Dolby Virtual Speaker. About Windows XP Media Center Edition Windows XP Media Center Edition turns a PC into a media center that integrates digital entertainment with the freedom of remote-control access. Consumers can enjoy live television, personal video recording, music, photos, videos, and DVDs from a new remote-controlled PC experience called Media Center. The sleek Media Center interface serves as a unified destination for entertainment on the Media Center PC and is designed to be viewed from anywhere in the room. Windows XP Media Center Edition, which builds on the rich media platform launched one year ago with Windows XP, is ideal for digital media enthusiasts and consumers in small, space-constrained environments, such as teenagers, college students, young adults, and families who want to use their PC for entertainment and digital media. Windows XP Media Center Edition is available on media center PCs from computer manufacturers Hewlett-Packard Co. (offering distribution in the US and Canada) and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (Korea), which are shipping the first wave of new media center PCs in time for the holiday shopping season. These new media-center PCs, powered by the Intel Pentium 4 processor, will provide the performance needed to get a best-in-class digital entertainment experience.
