Science-Based Klipsch Design Philosophy Produces Add-On Subwoofer that Lends Customization and Flexibility to Multimedia Audio Systems

INDIANAPOLIS (November 1, 2002) — Klipsch has expanded its award-winning ProMedia® line of multimedia speakers to include a standalone powered subwoofer. Klipsch’s Subwoofer System (SWS™) is the first product on the market that allows consumers to daisy-chain multiple subwoofers, creating customized, upgradeable multimedia systems with powerful, detailed bass impact.

“Klipsch redefined high performance in the multimedia world when we launched our ProMedia line in 1999,” notes Mark Casavant, vice president of multimedia for Klipsch. “After three years of setting the pace for the market, we’re making another bold move with our Subwoofer System, which is the first of several new computer audio systems that will hit the market next year. Serious gamers and people who listen to a lot of music or watch DVD movies are going to be really excited about this new Subwoofer System product. Nobody has ever heard this kind of bass from a speaker system designed primarily for use with PCs, Macs and especially gaming consoles such as Xbox, PlayStation2 and GameCube.”

Operating from 100Hz down to the lowest octave, the Klipsch Subwoofer System houses an 8-inch, long-throw driver and a dedicated 100-watt amplifier in a rear-ported enclosure. It provides pass-through connections that connect the computer sound card to the speakers for as many as six audio channels, making it easily adaptable to any system, from stereo to 5.1 surround sound. (Future Klipsch ProMedia speaker systems will have a dedicated SWS output jack for single-wire connection and master volume control.) A signal-sensing auto-on/off circuit and a level-control module further simplify installation and operation.

The Subwoofer System has RCA loop-through connections for the daisy-chaining of multiple subwoofers, which allows consumers to add on as many subwoofers as they need to reach their desired bass output. The RCA input also enables direct connection of the SWS™ to many TV sets and home audio systems, making Klipsch’s newest ProMedia model a probable bestseller among college students, as well as gaming and computer audio enthusiasts.

Bob Gassel, director of education for Klipsch, said that the new SWS™ product is rooted in science and acoustics research, and that it serves a specific performance-enhancing purpose that users will immediately notice.

According to Gassel, increasing the decibel level of an audio system is parallel to increasing the speed of a car. Modern race cars achieve speeds more than twice as fast as modern street cars, and they need about 10 times the horsepower to do it. (Modern street cars have between 100 and 200 horsepower and modern race cars have between 700 and 1,000 horsepower.) “It is similar in the acoustic sciences,” said Gassel. “Adding one powered subwoofer to a multimedia system increases the output by 3 decibels, but from there it takes two more subs to achieve a total of 6dB increase and another four more to achieve a total increase of 12 dB, and so on and so on.”

Gassel said it is unlikely that consumers will choose to increase their system output by 24dB with 15 additional subs, but he said even the novice gamer or computer audio enthusiast who likes to watch movies on his computer will be interested in adding 3-6dB.

The Klipsch ProMedia Subwoofer System will retail for $149.99 U.S. MSRP and it will be available for purchase from the web store at klipsch.com.
