WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Future of Music
Coalition and Georgetown University are pleased to announce the Third Annual
Policy Summit, which will take place over three days, Jan. 5-7, 2003, at
Georgetown University's Gaston Hall in Washington, D.C.
Now in its third year, the FMC Policy Summit is a forum for musicians, lawyers, academics, policymakers and music industry executives to come together to discuss and debate some of the most contentious issues surrounding digital technology, artists' rights and the current state of the music industry. Jan. 6 and 7's programs will include five panels each day, keynote speeches, musical performances, networking opportunities, and other events. In addition, a program is being developed for Jan. 5 so that working musicians with day jobs also may have a chance to attend. The Jan. 5 program will include three musician-specific panels that will focus on practical matters for working musicians and also serve as a "primer" for the next days' discussions Confirmed keynote speakers include Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI, Member of Senate Judiciary Committee) and Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA, Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Courts, Internet and Intellectual Property). In addition, more than 75 of the most respected and engaging minds in the music/tech community will be participating as panelists. Among those confirmed to date are: Patti Smith (musical legend), Ian MacKaye (Dischord Records/Fugazi), Derek Sivers (President, CD Baby), Bill Holland (Washington Bureau Chief, Billboard Magazine), Eric Boehlert (Senior Writer, Salon.com), Ann Powers (Experience Music Project), Kevin Murray (California State Senator. Chair, Select Committee on Entertainment Industry), Robert Santelli (Director and CEO, Experience Music Project), Cary Sherman (President, Recording Industry Association of America), Eamon Shackleton (Irish Music Rights Organization) Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL, Chairman of the Entertainment Industry Task Force), Lee Abrams (Chief Programming Officer, XM Radio), and Erik Bazilian (musician, songwriter). This year's topics of discussion include: The State of the Music/Tech Industry, The Impact of Radio Consolidation on Musicians and Citizens, The Webcasting Debate, Illegal Imagination: Sampling and the Public Domain, Musicians and Health Insurance, Retail in the 21st Century, Major Labels: Can They Innovate, International Issues, Control of Content and Next Year's Legislative Agenda. The Policy conference aims to remember why these topics are being discussed in the first place and why everyone has such strong opinions ... it's about the music! Live music is just one of the features that makes the FMC conference different. Musical performances will be held in-between the daytime panels, and there will also be very special evening concerts at various venues in Washington, D.C., with some very special and high-profile musicians. More information will be announced as plans are confirmed. Some of last year's performers included Danielle Howle, Lester Chambers, and Dave Fagin of the Rosenbergs. About the Future of Music Coalition The Future of Music Coalition is a not-for-profit, grassroots collaboration between leading independent musicians and experts from the worlds of technology, public policy and intellectual property law. The FMC seeks to educate the media and policymakers about music/technology issues, while also bringing together key stakeholders in an effort to come up with creative solutions to the challenges in this space.
