Packard Bell Europe Popular Desktop Computers

Packard Bell Europe Popular Desktop Computers
to Include Aureal's Vortex Audio Chip

Gamers Will Benefit from Award-Winning A3D Technology

Fremont, CA - October 20, 1998 - Aureal Semiconductor (OTC:AURL) today announced that Packard Bell (Europe) has incorporated Vortex™-based PCI sound cards using A3D positional audio into its Platinum™ and Pulsar™ desktop computer lines.

Aureal's Vortex™ chip and A3D positional sound cards are based on recreating all the hearing cues that humans use to perceive sounds in everyday life. The patented, ground-breaking technology enables PCs to accurately create for the listener a fully immersive sound field using only two speakers or headphones.

"We are very pleased to add Packard Bell's name to a growing list of industry-leading computer manufacturers that have recognized the value of Aureal's innovative A3D and Vortex," said Brendan O'Flaherty, VP and General Manager of the Systems Division at Aureal.

A3D Information

A3D was initially developed for NASA training in order to create the ultimate audio simulation environment. It is now used in over 200 games shipping or under development on the Microsoft Windows platform, including Unreal from Epic Megagames/GT Interactive, Incoming from Rage Software, Descent: Freespace from Interplay, Battlezone from Activision, and Jedi Knight from LucasArts. A3D is also supported by leading VRML browsers to enable lifelike sound across the Internet.

Vortex Information

Under development at Aureal for two years, Vortex is a high-performance PCI audio chip architecture. Enabled by the high bandwidth PCI-bus and the AC'97 CODEC specification, Vortex is designed to dramatically raise the quality level of PC audio by delivering a new wave of advanced features including positional 3D audio, pro-quality wave table music synthesis, DirectSound® acceleration and telephony support.

Vortex enables advanced quality and features while maintaining full support of existing DOS legacy audio functions. It also has the unique ability to interface to existing ISA telephony/modem solutions, thus allowing OEMs to eliminate the need for an ISA bus in their systems.
