Philips Showcases Technologies for Connected Homes and Workplaces at COMDEX 2002

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 2002--Royal Philips Electronics (AEX:PHI)(NYSE: PHG) is to highlight its focused technology strategy at COMDEX 2002 by showcasing several new products and solutions based on core competencies in display, storage, connectivity and digital video processing.

Visitors to the annual Las Vegas convention will have the opportunity to see Philips' application of these capabilities in business productivity products, enabling solutions for the connected home, and in optical disc-based digital video recording and data storage.

Professional productivity solutions

The full range of Philips-branded solutions for the professional and business electronics markets will be on display during COMDEX, including the very latest LCD and Real Flat CRT monitors with Philips' LightFrame3(TM) solution for pinpoint on-screen image accuracy. For professional display applications like education, the current line-up of highly efficient, cost-effective LCD projectors will also be on show, along with the award-winning 42-inch and 32-inch FlatTV(TM) plasma monitors.

Philips' world leads in storage will be represented by exhibits of the latest optical storage-based data drives for PCs. Along with the new USB-based external Jack Rabbit 32-speed CD-RW drive, Philips will unveil its latest DVD+R/+RW data drive. Offering faster, 4x write speed on DVD+R media, the new drive will enable the creation of 4.7-gigabyte DVDs containing video, images and PC data in less than 15 minutes.

Philips will also be demonstrating its solutions for the PC multimedia experience: to meet the performance demands of the latest applications, Philips will be exhibiting two brand new sound cards featuring Dolby® Digital 5.1 multichannel audio.

Philips innovates The Connected Home

Philips will underline its status as a leading developer of wireless connectivity technologies at COMDEX with The Connected Home, a suite of demonstrations showcasing ready-for-market OEM component solutions, along with end products such as the acclaimed iPronto LCD universal remote control, and a new-design Bluetooth(TM) headset.

The Connected Home will provide a showcase for Philips' expertise in bridging solutions for different connectivity protocols. Demonstrations in this arena will include a unique solution for wireless devices to access powerline networks via Wi-Fi (802.11b). Visitors will also be able to see the Philips Possio PX20, a wireless services gateway providing PDAs, PCs and other Bluetooth-enabled devices with access to IP networks via 802.11b-based WLANs.

Philips will also be demonstrating new and highly innovative technology platforms for media distribution and storage within the home. Along with modular digital video recording solutions for consumer electronics manufacturers and PC OEMs, Philips will showcase production-ready media streaming and bridging executions embracing the Bluetooth and 802.11b and 802.11a protocols, technologies in which Philips enjoys considerable leads in IC and module manufacturing and development.

As part of the WiFi Pavillion being staged at COMDEX by the WiFi Alliance - of which Philips is an active board member - Philips will be demonstrating a number of component technology solutions for the computing industry, including hybrid 802.11b/802.11a wireless solutions, a platform technology enabling seamless wireless networking for entertainment between PCs and A/V appliances, as well as the iPronto universal remote control available for OEM bundling or retail distribution.

Underlining the success of DVD recording

Philips' commitment to the DVD+R/+RW format will be further underlined at COMDEX by the company's participation in a static display by the DVD+RW Alliance, the organization of which Philips is a founding member. Philips will be amongst numerous presentations of the latest consumer and data recorders based on the DVD+R/+RW format. Visitors will be able to discuss with representatives from the main Alliance members - the current status of DVD+RW, the format supported by all major PC manufacturers and offering optimum performance, two-way compatibility and ease-of-use for both the consumer electronics and PC domains.
