Pioneer Launches DigitaLibrary for Entertainment Anytime, Anywhere

Wired or Wireless Solutions Allow Music, Home Movies, Photos and Internet Content to Be Enjoyed Throughout the Home

LAS VEGAS, CES BOOTH #9319, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc., today launched its DigitaLibrary(TM), the first in the company's line of Digital Network Entertainment(TM) products. The DigitaLibrary will allow users to distribute multi-media content including music, video, photos and Internet content, wirelessly or through wired connections throughout the home, helping to establish the home entertainment network.

"The proliferation of in-home personal computers has transformed the way consumers get their information. Now the consumer electronics industry is going to revolutionize the way consumers are entertained, with the creation of a home entertainment network that relies on CE products with easy-to-use on screen graphic menus," said Craig McManis, vice president of marketing for the home entertainment division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. "The Pioneer DigitaLibrary is the first of our Digital Network Entertainment(TM) products, but eventually, all of our products will be network-capable."

The DigitaLibrary, DL-1000-S has an 80-gigabyte hard drive as well as an ethernet input for wired and wireless connection. The DL-1000-S offers composite outputs, an S-video output, VGA output, and an analog left/right output. The CD drive in the DL-1000-S offers between 3x and 5x write speeds to the hard drive for the direct transfer of content to the server. The DigitaLibrary "branch," the DL-500AV, is the receiver that can be set up in any other room of the house where content will be streamed. The branch offers an ethernet input, composite video and audio output, S-video output, and analog left and right output connections.

The DigitaLibrary offers four primary functions including a Music Jukebox, Photo Albums, Video Clips and Internet Content. Any of these functions can be enjoyed by various members of the household simultaneously in multiple rooms of the house.

The Music Jukebox of the DigitaLibrary has the capacity to store as many as 1500 CDs in a compressed audio format. Consumers can rip contents of their favorite CDs via the internal CD player or transfer music from their PC. A digital "librarian" automatically retrieves the artist's name, song title, album title and genre from an online database. Songs and play-lists can be created or deleted as easily as they were added to the DigitaLibrary.

The Photo Album feature has the capacity for storing thousands of photos in multiple digital formats. Images are added to the DigitaLibrary via PC or the unit's internal CD player. They can then be sorted to create separate photo albums for viewing as a slide show that also can be accompanied by music from the DigitaLibrary's Music Jukebox. No longer will family members hunch over a small computer monitor to see the newest photos -- they can be enjoyed in a "lean back" environment right in the living room using the DigitaLibrary and the television.

Using the Video Clips feature, consumers can enjoy video footage in DVD quality streams. Footage can include video that has been downloaded from the Internet or personal home movies. As a growing number of consumers embrace new editing technology for home movies, this feature becomes increasingly useful.

The Internet Content feature allows consumers to enjoy streaming audio and video including the latest movie trailers, music videos, Internet radio and news information from Pioneer's online content partner, Launch.com. The DigitaLibrary offers playback of MPEG 1, MPEG 2, Windows Media Video, Windows Media Audio and MP3.

The DigitaLibrary is the first step for consumers who want to experience a truly "connected" home. With the power to distribute three DVD-quality streams and 21 audio streams simultaneously, every member of the family can view their favorite material from the DigitaLibrary at the same time.

The DL-1000-S and DL-500AV will be available in May at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $1,200 and $900 respectively.

The DigitaLibrary is powered with software from the Mediabolic ONE digital convergence platform. Mediabolic was chosen for its flexible, innovative solutions that provide high quality audio and video reproduction.
