Alpine's New 2003 Type-S Speakers Feature Performance-Inspired Cosmetics for Great Looks and Great Sound at a Great Value

Seven New Models Offer Maximum Installation Versatility and Share Family Look With Type-S Subwoofers

TORRANCE, Calif., Jan 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Alpine Electronics of America, Inc., the industry-leading manufacturer of high performance mobile electronics, today unveiled seven all-new Type-S coaxial speakers, designed to be the best looking, best sounding and best fitting speakers in their class. Alpine has given the Type-S speaker line new automotive performance-inspired cosmetics with an open spoke grill, stylish blue Type-S logo and titanium-colored, aluminum-coated cone. The new Type-S frame was engineered to accommodate a 180 percent larger magnet, delivering huge increases in power handling and bass output.

The SPS-170A 6.5-inch two-way speaker handles 200 watt peak power and delivers a variable swivel tweeter design for improved sound quality and high frequency reproduction even when mounted in a low position on the vehicle's door. The specially designed oversized 6-inch adapter ring allows for easy installation into a greater number of vehicles without the need for additional and costly modifications.

Extensive vehicle research was performed to increase the application flexibility for the seven speakers in the Type-S line. The frame was tooled to maximize cone size, yet minimize the cutout size and mounting depth requirements needed to fit most vehicle doors. The result is a speaker that has a large yet efficient motor structure, coupled to an oversized cone. This design produces better low frequency performance using the built-in power of a head unit, yet can handle the extra power from a larger external amplifier.

Alpine's Type-S speakers share a family look with the Type-S subwoofer line. Designed, engineered and tuned in the U.S., Alpine's five Type-S subwoofers for 2003 deliver more SPL with reduced distortion and long term reliability. The Type-S subwoofers come in 10- and 12-inch designs and feature Alpine's exclusive Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry (patent- pending) which optimizes the magnetic circuit for increased power handling. A dual progressive Nomex® spider design with integrated tinsel leads provides longer stroke for more SPL, better control and improved durability at high output levels. Alpine's airflow-optimized dual flare pole vent and heat transfer plate improves thermal management for more power handling and greater output. All Type-S subwoofers also feature Kevlar reinforced pulp cones; high excursion 3/4-inch Santoprene® Surrounds; custom high-strength baskets; high-strength brass voice coil bobbins; and heavy-duty 8ga. push terminals.
