Toshiba Introduces New DVD-Video Players and Showcases Comprehensive Portfolio At Annual Dealer Line Show

Lineup Features New DVD-Audio Model, New Progressive Scan DVD Recorder, and Active Lifestyle Design Portable DVD Player

HILTON HEAD, S.C., May 8 /PRNewswire/ -- At its annual Dealer Line Show, Toshiba America Consumer Products, Inc., a primary developer and leader in DVD technology, unveiled its comprehensive lineup of new DVD products designed to satisfy the market's fast-growing demand for superior quality DVD entertainment. Among the highlights, Toshiba has expanded its already broad range of DVD products and feature sets with the industry's first ergonomically and fashionably designed portable DVD player (SD-P1200), a new DVD-Audio model (SD-4900), a combination DVD/DVR product with TiVo basic service included (SD- H400) and a Super MultiDrive DVD recorder (D-R1).

"From our main line DVD players with cutting edge features, to portables with lightweight and stylish designs, to a multi-compatible, easy-to-use DVD recorder, Toshiba's DVD line features smart, functional products that meet consumers needs," said Jodi Sally, Director of Marketing, Toshiba Digital A/V Group. "In 2003 we have enhanced and expanded our portable line-up and combination products, while adding even more features to our mainline products."

Toshiba's state-of-the art portable DVD line includes the new SD-P2500 (MSRP $799.99) model, a player with an ultra-high resolution (1024x600 pixel resolution) 8.9" widescreen LCD, progressive scan output and 2-channel DVD- Audio compatibility. The SD-P2500 also features a SD/SM Memory Card Slot for JPEG viewing. Toshiba also introduced this year the SD-P1200 (MSRP $599.99) model, the market's first portable player with a "sure-grip" design in a creative, eye-popping color. The faux rubberized cabinet design minimizes the unit from slipping from the user's hands or smooth surfaces.

On the DVD recording technology front, Toshiba continues its tradition of leadership with the new D-R1 (MSRP $599.99) recorder with Super MultiDrive capabilities. The new model allows compatibility for recording and playback of DVD-RAM, DVD-R/-RW formats for the widest selection of recording and viewing choices in the growing DVD recorder market. In addition, Toshiba's Time Slip function offers the ability to simultaneously record and playback, enabling consumers to pause live television as well as begin viewing a program recording that is already in progress. The new recorder is equipped with convenience features such as IEEE 1394 DV digital interface for transferring and editing home video to DVD discs.

Toshiba's line also features the new SD-H400 combination DVD/DVR product. The product, set to ship in August, delivers on the promise of the licensing agreement made between Toshiba and TiVo. This model will be the very first combination of progressive scan DVD and TiVo technology available at retail.

The SD-H400 will include DVR features from TiVo called the TiVo Basic service. This basic functionality will be included with the product and will be capable of upgrading to the full TiVo service and the TiVo Home Media Option.

Toshiba's 2003 lineup also includes a new DVD-Audio model, the SD-4900 (June/MSRP $149.99), featuring Super ColorStream PRO® progressive scan output, which allows 8:8:8 over sampling of interlaced color signals, simultaneously enabling them as the ideal source component for display on a conventional analog color television set. Further enhancing image quality, the SD-4900 features Video Black Level Expansion circuitry. This capability allows viewers to set the reference black threshold cutoff to either Normal (7.5 IRE) or Enhanced (0 IRE). The Enhanced position expands the overall contrast range in the picture, resulting in richer, deeper blacks, finer tonal gradation and gray scale reproduction.

Last but not least, the new SD-4900 is equipped with leading-edge 24- Bit/192kHz Digital-Analog converters, designed to deliver the full sonic benefits of DVD-Audio performances. The Toshiba SD-4900 DVD can deliver up to six channels of full bandwidth audio. In this mode, the DVD-Audio format utilizes MLP (Lossless Packing) decoding for ultra-high resolution (24- bit/96kHz) multi-channel DVD-Audio programs. Additional consumer-friendly features include Digital Photo Viewer and Digital Video noise reduction circuitry.

Rounding out Toshiba's mainline DVD players is the SD-3900 (MSRP $149.99) with progressive scan output and a sleek, streamlined silver chassis. Toshiba progressive scan-equipped DVD players are the ultimate "future-ready" video source components. Connecting a Toshiba progressive scan-equipped DVD player to an HDTV monitor display device yields an unsurpassed home theater experience, with onscreen images that are film-like in quality. Finally, the SD-2900 (MSRP $129.99) offers a new slim cosmetic design and comes equipped with component video outputs compatible with Toshiba's finest televisions. All models offer WMA/MP3 compatibility, Digital Photo Viewer and Digital Picture Zoom. Complementing the full-featured SD-V290 (MSRP $229.99) DVD/VCR combination unit, Toshiba's new SD-V390 (MSRP $249.99) brings the added benefit of ColorStream Pro® progressive scan output that ensures a more film-like experience. Both models integrate a 4 head HiFi VCR with a full- featured DVD player. Both models permit DVD playback while recording a TV broadcast on VHS.

Toshiba has also made significant enhancements to picture and sound quality. Select models include features such as Enhanced Picture Mode, which allows the user to select a viewing mode based on the type of DVD being viewed, and an Enhanced Audio Mode which includes a Dialogue Expander and virtual surround sound. A Bookmarking function permits users to set favorite scenes on any loaded DVD disc for instant access.
