SRS Labs’ Circle Surround® Technology Hits The Road With Real Time Surround Sound Seminars

SRS Labs Joins the 2003 Multichannel Mixing & Encoding Techniques Seminar Tour Demonstrating the Latest Surround Sound Technology to Audio Professionals Nationwide

SANTA ANA, Calif., Sept. 12, 2003 - SRS Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ: SRSL), a leading provider of innovative audio, voice and semiconductor technology solutions, today announced that its professional audio encoding/decoding technology Circle Surround® will be hitting the road in cities across the country as part of the Multichannel Mixing and Encoding Techniques Seminar Tour. The seminars are produced by Fits and Starts Productions, LLC, which is the leading producer of audio seminars and workshops in North America, with the cooperation of the Audio Engineering Society (AES). Circle Surround is a powerful and versatile multichannel encoding and decoding technology capable of delivering up to 6.1 channels of audio over any two-channel medium. The first six seminars of the yearlong tour kick off in Lowell, north of Boston, on Sept. 17 and move through Massachusetts, New York and Maryland.

The tour, hosted by audio engineer and nationally recognized surround sound authority Mike “Mr. Multichannel” Sokol, provides in-depth technical seminars focusing specifically on how to mix, record, encode and decode surround sound.   Qualified audio professionals from the AES (Audio Engineering Society) and NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) organizations, as well as recording students and their faculty at top colleges, private programs and universities are invited free of charge for the day-long session.  Sokol will show audio professionals how SRS Circle Surround is the newest, most powerful and flexible surround format available through on-hand demonstrations of SRS Labs’ broadcast hardware solutions, which include the CSE-07 encoder and CSD-07 decoder.

Throughout the tour, the seminar guests will be taught to edit, create, encode and playback surround sound music using SRS Circle Surround technology, which is quickly becoming the surround sound standard for television broadcasters, record labels, and Emmy-award winning television mixers. The tour also focuses on how Circle Surround is the ideal encoding solution for “real world” applications because it is the most flexible surround solution. This means that once content is Circle Surround encoded, the signal can be carried over standard stereo cables or broadcast methods and listeners with a surround sound home theater playback system will enjoy surround sound but listeners with a two speaker stereo system or who use the internal TV speakers will get an enhanced and thrilling stereo experience.  Circle Surround encoding empowers audio professionals with the ability to deliver up to 6.1 surround sound to their audience with the confidence of complete backward compatibility.

“We’re glad to have SRS Labs and its Circle Surround technology as part of our seminars,” says Hector La Torre of Fits and Starts Productions, LLC. “As multichannel audio becomes increasingly sophisticated, we are committed to keeping audio professionals across the country up-to-date with the very latest technologies, including SRS Circle Surround.”

Kurt Heiden, product marketing manager for SRS Labs’ Circle Surround group says, “There is simply no substitute for the hands-on experience that a tour of this caliber delivers to working audio professionals. We are excited about the future of Circle Surround in broadcasting and this tour offers an excellent opportunity to showcase the benefits and flexibility of the technology.”

About SRS Circle Surround®

SRS Labs’ Circle Surround (“CS”) is a patented and highly versatile multichannel audio format that supports a wide range of surround sound creation and playback applications.  Circle Surround provides the capability to encode up to 6.1 channels of audio for transmission or storage over standard two-channel carriers such as CD and stereo broadcasts.  It is backward compatible with mono, stereo and most matrix surround decoders.

Circle Surround encoding has made inroads to many of Hollywood’s most influential creative talent and professional broadcasters. Current broadcasters include ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN HD, FOX, FX, TNT, PBS and over a dozen programs including the 2003 Tony Awards, 2003 ESPY Awards, X Games, NFL and NBA broadcasts.  The CS format is the optimum surround solution for television because it enables any network currently telecasting in stereo to now deliver up to 6.1 surround sound to its viewers with no change to the distribution or broadcast infrastructure.

To date, Circle Surround decoding has been incorporated by leading hardware and software manufacturers including: Kenwood, Marantz, Theta Digital, Accuphase, Jaton, M-Audio, Orion Studios and Smart Devices.  A wide range of analog and digital implementation options for CS and CS II are available from the SRS Labs’ family of platform partners including AKM, Analog Devices, ASP Microelectronics, Cirrus Logic, Motorola, NJRC and STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments.
