3D Audio Chip Enables 3D Sound in DCM Home Theater System |
| LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16,
1998--MedianiX Semiconductor today announced that DCM Corp., a leading supplier of home
entertainment speaker systems, is using the MedianiX MED25006 Dolby(r) Pro Logic(tm)
decoder/virtualizer chip in the recently introduced Visual Listening(tm) Home Theater
System Model VLS-2. The new system, which transforms a two-channel output into a surround sound experience, is designed to be used with any television that has variable outputs, although it is also well-suited to such other applications as multimedia PC. It is being shown in the MedianiX demonstration suite (Boardwalk Casino/Holiday Inn, suite 1767) at the Comdex trade show here, and is now available from Circuit City Stores, the nation's largest retailer of brand-name consumer electronics. The DCM(r) Model VLS-2 uses the MedianiX chip to create the effect of a full surround sound system in a compact two-piece system consisting of a set-top speaker module and a subwoofer. Virtual Dolby Surround technology in the DSP-based MED25006 decodes Dolby-encoded signals that normally drive five speakers and a subwoofer, and ``virtualizes'' them to create the impression that the listener is encompassed by multiple speakers when only two speakers and a subwoofer are actually present. The combination of this audio processing technology with DCM's advanced loudspeaker technology creates high-quality, home-theater-type audio without the cost and complexity of a traditional multi-speaker system. ``Mixing our speaker design and manufacturing expertise with MedianiX' capabilities in digital audio processing has created the ideal choice for consumers who are interested in getting big home theater sound from a small system that is easy to connect and operate,'' said David Watson, DCM's director of sales and marketing. ``This is a very exciting opportunity for us,'' said John Lee, MedianiX vice president of marketing. ``Being designed into the DCM product line, which is being sold through the premier electronics retailer in the country, represents a further validation of our technology and market approaches.'' Martin Lindsay, Manager of Licensing Technical Development at Dolby Laboratories, said, ``The combination of the Virtual Dolby Surround circuit and the DCM electro-acoustic design is a unique and exciting blend of technologies.'' The MED25006 In The Model VLS-2 The MED25006 is an all-digital implementation based on proprietary 24-bit DSP technology that converts two-channel audio containing 5.1-channel encoding into two-channel 3D virtual surround sound that contains all of the original information. The IC has both a Dolby Pro Logic decoder and Dolby virtualizing algorithms on-chip. The DCM Model VLS-2 Visual Listening Home Theater System consists of a set-top module and a 100 W powered subwoofer, and can be controlled by a TV remote control. It uses a number of proprietary electro-acoustic design techniques to accurately reproduce music and video soundtracks, by positioning sound images around the listener while maintaining a focused center-channel dialog. DCM Corporation Headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, DCM Corp. designs and manufactures loudspeakers that provide maximum home entertainment quality in all price ranges. DCM speakers have a long-standing reputation for exceptional imaging, high musical accuracy and excellent reliability, and are used in a wide range of professional venues. They have also been selected as the premier speaker line by numerous leading retailers.
