| The AudioReQuest Digital Music System Gives Consumers Instant Access to 6,000 Songs Using Quantum QuickView Audio Technology |
| TROY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS
WIRE)--Dec. 20, 1999-- Creating a new MP3 home stereo jukebox category primed for
explosive growth, ReQuest Multimedia today announced it has selected Quantum QuickView
audio storage technology from Quantum Corp. (NYSE: HDD ) for its AudioReQuest(TM) Digital
Music System -- the first component designed to store, organize and play up to 300 hours
of CD-quality digital music. ``Listening to music directly from CDs will soon become a thing of the past,'' said Steven Vasquez, ReQuest Multimedia's chief executive officer. ``We are providing consumers an entirely more convenient and unrestrictive way to enjoy music. Our digital music system, (DMS) acts like a central music server, providing extremely easy access to a vast collection of stored music.'' The system is a hard drive-enabled, digital music jukebox that takes music listening convenience to the next level. Instead of having to search for a single song on a CD or album, the AudioRequest player allows listeners to use a remote control device to gain instant access to a collection of up to 6,000 songs saved on a Quantum QuickView hard drive. Once the music resides in this central location, it can easily be played back in any order a listener desires. The AudioReQuest DMS will be available for purchase in January of 2000, via the Request Web site, www.request.com. It will sell for $799. ``IDC believes that the digital audio category will undergo significant growth over the next few years, with over 10 million units shipping in 2003,'' said Kevin Hause, director of consumer device research for International Data Corporation (IDC). ``While the near-term market will be fueled by portable players, broader market expansion will accelerate with the advent of standalone and car audio players.'' Digital Music System Features The system includes an integrated compact disc player that also allows users to record and store music content using digital audio compression on a Quantum QuickView hard drive. Music enthusiasts with collections of older analog music formats, such as audiocassettes or LP records, can digitally encode their favorites through AudioReQuest's analog line-in input. Additionally, users can download a wide variety of digital music directly from a PC or the Internet to the AudioReQuest system using MPEG 1 Layer 3 Compression (MP3) technology. The AudioReQuest player also supports Windows Media Audio, and will soon support other popular Internet music formats. In addition to its built-in display, AudioReQuest connects to a television for an enhanced, easy-to-use, graphical user interface. Users can easily search their entire music collection by song title, artist, album, and genre and create their own playlists. The system includes a graphics feature that shows on-screen animations moving in time with selected music tracks. AudioReQuest supports both NTSC and PAL with S-Video and composite outputs. Quantum QuickView Audio Technology Quantum QuickView technology for audio is a digital audio recording and storage engine that provides consumers with the ultimate in music management features including: instant recording, instant playback and instant access to any song recorded on a Quantum QuickView drive. Because there is no tape involved, there is no rewinding or fast forwarding to find a specific song. Instead, users benefit from instant access to any song they have recorded. Quantum QuickView includes Quantum's Quiet Drive(TM) Technology (QDT), a series of innovative acoustical advancements and unique drive features that dramatically reduce hard drive noise levels. Quantum is the exclusive supplier of the enabling disk drives to personal video recording OEMs TiVo and Replay Networks. Quantum pioneered the category of products that control information and entertainment through hard disk drive technology. ``We're excited about working with ReQuest because they are helping to create a new category in which the Quantum QuickView for Audio brand will add tremendous value,'' said Tony Francesca, vice president and general manager of Quantum's Consumer Electronics Business Unit. ``Quantum QuickView will play a pivotal role by enabling features that offer listeners instantaneous access to and manipulation of their digitally stored music. It is our belief that hard-drive enabled music jukeboxes will provide consumers with a level of control and convenience that they will embrace enthusiastically.'' ReQuest Multimedia ReQuest Multimedia, developer of consumer products that allow storage and retrieval of digital media, is driving the consumer multimedia market by providing innovative products that enable home users to create, store, and experience compelling new media content through their stereo and television systems and the Internet. Quantum Corporation Founded in 1980, Quantum Corporation (www.quantum.com) is the world's leading storage supplier in five of the seven markets it serves: desktop hard disk drives, tape drives, network attached storage (NAS) appliances, solid state systems and hard disk drives for the emerging personal video recorder (PVR) market. Quantum is also the second largest supplier of mid-range tape automation systems and a leading supplier of high-end hard disk drives. In 1999 Quantum became the first Silicon Valley company to issue tracking stock, replacing its existing common stock with the ticker symbols DSS and HDD, which track the separate performance of the company's DLT and Storage Systems and Hard Disk Drive businesses. Both stocks are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Selling its products through OEM and distribution channels worldwide, sales for the fiscal year ending March 1999 were $1.3 billion for Quantum's DLT and Storage Systems Group and $3.6 billion for Quantum's Hard Disk Drive Group. Quantum, the Quantum logo, and Quiet Drive are trademarks of Quantum Corporation, registered in the United States and other countries. The foregoing statements regarding future technology, products incorporating that technology estimated product performance, availability and price, and the impact of the new products on ReQuest, Quantum and the market are forward looking statements and actual results could vary. Factors which could affect actual results include the ability to successfully integrate new technology into products in a cost-effective manner, the ability to successfully manufacture and distribute new products at sufficient volume, quality and reasonable cost, the timing of new product introductions, competition, and the significant uncertainty of market acceptance of new products.
