Pioneer Achieves Milestones in DVD Technology for New Millennium

Industry Awards Nearly One Dozen for 1999

LONG BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 1, 2000--Pioneer New Media Technologies Inc., an industry leader in optical technology, welcomed the new millennium by celebrating one of its most notable years in DVD technology achievements.

Last year was a progressive year in Pioneer DVD product introductions, which were also recognized industry-wide by twelve separate innovation awards from top publications.

Highlighting Pioneer's list of industry ``firsts'' for 1999, the company introduced the 4.7GB DVD-Recordable drive, a unique 720-disc, 3.3 terabyte modular FlexLibrary (DVD jukebox), and the industry's first 6X and 10X DVD-ROM drives. Pioneer also expanded its line of DVD media becoming the first to offer printable DVD-R discs for more convenient and efficient disc duplication and labeling.

``By highlighting the year with these technology introductions, Pioneer is providing more than just an expanded product offering. We are making a strong statement about the viability of DVD technology and our commitment to its continued advancement,'' stated Tom Haga, president of Pioneer New Media Technologies.

The industry has recognized Pioneer with several prestigious product awards for its 1999 DVD line-up, including:

-- DVR-S201 (DVD-Recordable Drive)
-- Product of the Year, Imaging & Document Solutions
-- NAB Editor's Pick of Show, Television & Broadcast
-- Innovation in Technology Platinum Award, AV Video
-- NAB Editor's Choice, Videography Magazine
-- Pick Hit, Video System Magazine
-- DRM-7000 (720-disc, DVD FlexLibrary)
-- Best of AIIM, Imaging & Document Solutions
-- Product of the Year, Imaging & Document Solutions
-- DRM-1004V40 (100-disc DVD Jukebox)
     -- Editor's Choice, Emedia
-- DVD-114/104S (10X DVD-ROM Drive)
-- Kick Ass Award, Maximum PC
-- DVD-303S (6X DVD-ROM Drive)
     -- Editor's Choice, PC Gamer
-- Kick Ass Award, Maximum PC

Capturing the majority of product awards, Pioneer's 4.7GB DVD-Recordable drive advanced recordable DVD technology by raising storage capacity from 3.95GB to 4.7GB, matching that of replicated DVD discs.

In addition, the lower market price of $5,400 enabled the technology to open doors into new markets outside of the DVD authoring arena, making it more affordable for new applications in vertical industries such as medical and finance.

According to the recent award announcement by Imaging & Document Solutions, ``The second generation DVD-R drive from Pioneer is a major milestone in the maturation of DVD technology. We are confident this product is truly deserving of our highest recognition.''

Pioneer's FlexLibrary set a new precedence for DVD storage and retrieval flexibility, by offering a modular DVD jukebox retrieval system capable of holding up to 720 discs with up to 3.3 terabytes of total data storage.

It is also the first and only jukebox capable of integrating both CD-R and DVD-R recording technologies, as well as a unique disc-flipping mechanism to realize up to 6.8 terabytes of data storage.

On the single drive front, Pioneer continued its undisputed reputation for ``first-to-market'' delivery of superior drive performance for both its 6X and 10X DVD-ROM drives.
