- Broadband Digital Audio Playback Device is Creating a Buzz in the Home Audio, Recording and Personal Computer Industries - |
| LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS
WIRE)--May 11, 2000-- Turtle Beach(TM) took the wraps off its forthcoming AudioTron(TM)
digital music appliance today at E3 2000, previewing the product for the international
news media and market analysts at this electronic entertainment industry trade show. The
device - the company's first mass market, networked PC appliance - incorporates home
networking technology to remotely play digital music stored on a user's personal computer,
as well as audio originating on the Internet. For instance, an AudioTron in the living
room can play WMA and MP3 files saved on a PC located in another part of the house. It is
expected to ship this fall. ``The day we've all heard of - when your home appliances will communicate with a central computer - has finally come with the introduction of AudioTron,'' said Carmine J. Bonanno, president and CEO, Voyetra Turtle Beach. ``We're already seeing demand for the unit, primarily from the same group that snapped up DVD players and cable modems over the past couple of years. We expect AudioTron to be one of the hottest electronic gifts this holiday season.'' AudioTron connects to a personal computer through standard home phone wiring (it does not interfere with normal phone or DSL operation) or an optional Ethernet/USB board. Using either the included remote control or buttons on the AudioTron base unit, the owner can play all the digital music stored on his computer, creating custom playlists, randomizing song playback, and more. Album and song titles - if stored as part of the digital music file - will be shown on the base unit's lighted LCD display. Users can obtain digital music in a variety of ways. They can use the included Voyetra® AudioStation® 4.0 software to record songs off of CDs that they already own, storing them in a digitally compressed format. MP3 files can be downloaded from a number of online sites, either royalty-free for many up and coming artists or for a small fee from major record labels. Owners can also use Microsoft® (NASDAQ:MSFT - news) Windows® streaming audio with AudioTron, listening to music, sports, talk shows, and any other event broadcast on the Web. Turtle Beach is currently working with a number of industry organizations to define the rights management attributes of AudioTron, as well as with selected music labels to ease the ability of AudioTron owners to audition and purchase songs through the unit.
