Overview

wavesurround.jpg (19554 bytes)With all the craze about MP3 several companies have been working at enhancing your listening experience. One of the first to venture into this market is Wave Arts. Wave Arts, Inc., headquartered in Arlington, Massachusetts, is a premier software developer of 3D audio and digital signal processing technology. A privately held company, Wave Arts was founded in 1998 by Dr. Bill Gardner, a Ph.D. graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab. Wave Arts licenses its software products which include: Environmental FX, Reverb & Effects Suite and WA3D Audio to multimedia software application developers. It also licenses to manufacturers of professional mixing consoles, DVD players, MP3 players, AV receivers, digital and analog TVs, set top boxes and theatrical sound systems.

In addition to these professional tools, Wave Arts, in collaboration with Human Machine Interfaces, Inc. has designed the WaveSurround Plugin for Winamp. The plugin is powered by Wave Arts 3D Audio technology, which is the result of over 9 years of research into 3D audio. Frank and I started this review of version 2.5 of the WaveSurround plugin and will in the end base it on version 3.0, which was just released.

winamp.jpg (7757 bytes)In a typical Winamp listening environment, stereo MP3 files are played back through two speakers placed on either side of the computer monitor. Because the speakers are so close the virtual soundstage is really limited to the space between the two speakers, which really limits the listeners ability to immerse themselves in the music. What the WaveSurround plugin is designed to do is remove the limitation of poor speaker placement by using signal processing technology that gamers will be at least somewhat familiar with to synthesize "virtual" loudspeakers that can be positioned anywhere around the listener. According to Wave Arts, by positioning the virtual speakers to the sides of the listener, the listener becomes immersed in the sound mix. There is also a custom headphone setting that according to Wave Arts will eliminate the sensation that sound is coming from inside the listeners head.

In addition to the virtual speaker positioning the latest version of the plugin also offers a bass boost and several adjustable reverb settings!

So on to the installation and technical overview
